The questioner : The second one.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : Some scholars made it obligatory to mention the bridal gift during the contract so that those present would know it from the mouth of the guardian, who says, “I have married you my daughter for a bridal gift of such and such,” and he mentions it, while others do not consider it obligatory. What is the stronger position in your view?

The Shaykh : First, do not say “faradiyyah,” rather it is “far’iyyah.”

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Second, we do not know of any evidence for this obligation, because a man can marry a woman without specifying a bridal gift for her, but she is entitled to the equivalent of her peers’ gifts. Is the answer clear?

The questioner : Yes, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : May Allah bless you.
