Is it permissible for a student of knowledge to seek knowledge from scholars who are not from the people of the Sunnah and the community, and what is the criterion in that?

The Shaykh : Yes?

The questioner : Is this the residence of Shaykh Al-Albani?

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : Is he there?

The Shaykh: He is present.

The questioner : Is he the one who is speaking with me?

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : I have a question. You have a brother from Yemen, Badr al-Attar, who has a question for you!

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner : First, let me start: How are you, Shaykh?

The Shaykh : May Allah make you well. Praise be to Allah, I am well.

The questioner : May Allah keep you alive. Is it permissible, Shaykh, to seek knowledge from those who are not from the people of the Sunnah and the community, knowing that those from whom they will seek knowledge believe in them and rub themselves against them, and when they die, they build graves for them and make them partners alongside Allah (Mighty and Majestic), since they slaughter animals for them?!

The Shaykh : First of all: do they not find anyone else to learn from?!

The questioner : Honestly, they have all the arts!

The Shaykh : May Allah guide you. Answer the question.

The questioner: Huh?

The Shaykh : Answer the question.

The questioner : Okay, okay.

The Shaykh : Shall I repeat the question to you?!

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So that you do not lose the question, I will tell you: This person who wants to study with those whom you described as grave-worshippers does not find any scholars from the people of the Sunnah to study with them. Does he not find them, or does he find them?

The questioner : He finds them, he finds them.

The Shaykh : Then it is not permissible.

The questioner : But if now...

The Shaykh : Then, then it is not permissible.

The questioner : Yes, Shaykh, I agree with you, but I want to clarify, for example, that the people of the Sunnah and the community, praise be to Allah, are in many areas of Yemen, like...The Shaykh : Muqbil and other shaykhs, praise be to Allah, but for example, this person saw that...The student : he would control himself and take from them some of the arts, such as the principles of jurisprudence, for example, the science of the principles of jurisprudence!

The Shaykh : Who knows? Perhaps he will take from them principles that are not in accordance with the Book and the Sunnah. Who knows?!

The questioner : He has, praise be to Allah, reached a level in seeking knowledge, and he has things that he can direct to their proper field!

The Shaykh : Shaykh, may Allah guide you, you are wasting my time. I am asking you a question, and the old poet’s saying applies to you: "She traveled east and I traveled west *** How different is the east from the west." Why do you not answer my question?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : What? Yes, yes. You tell me: Yes, and you nod, and then you wander away from me!

The questioner : Okay, forgive me, Shaykh.

The Shaykh : Yes, may Allah forgive you in this world and the Hereafter.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.

The Shaykh : But this time is precious to us, especially since he is like one waiting for his turn to ask.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : I am saying: Your statement that he will take from them some sciences in which there is no contradiction—who knows? Perhaps they will present to him a rule, for example, they will say to him: "It is not permissible to abrogate the Qur'an with the Sunnah." Who knows whether this statement is correct or incorrect?! And he went to them to study the science of the principles of jurisprudence. Or perhaps they will say to him: "It is not permissible to specify the Qur'an with the Sunnah," and this exists in some of the schools of jurisprudence followed today!!

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : So who knows the correct from the incorrect?! And for that reason, the righteous Salaf warned their followers against sitting with the innovators. How could they not warn them against receiving knowledge from them?!

The questioner: All right, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : We are continuing.
