And sincerity in religion is the second important matter after a person worships Allah, Mighty and Majestic, as Allah has prescribed. As you know, worship is not accepted except with two conditions. The first condition is that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has legislated it in His Book or in the hadith of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The second matter is that it be in the manner in which the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought it, with no addition and no subtraction. And added to this and that is His saying, Blessed and Exalted is He: [Al-Bayyinah 98:5]. And there is no doubt that knowledge is part of the religion. How could it not be, when the Lord of the Worlds says: [Al-Mujadila 58:11]. But this knowledge that raises its owner in degrees with Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, is only the knowledge that is pure for the Face of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He. Otherwise, the matter is as it came in many hadiths, and there is no room to mention them now. Rather, their summary is what came in some of the reports of the Salaf: "Woe to the ignorant person once, and woe to the scholar seven times." This is what we advise the student of knowledge.
