A speech by some of the Shaykhs on the etiquette of the student of knowledge, with a comment by Shaykh Al-Albani on it.

The questioner: Praise is to Allah; we praise Him, seek His help, seek His forgiveness, and seek His guidance. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil of our own selves and from the evil of our deeds. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whoever He misguides, none can guide. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and His Messenger. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon him, his family, and all his Companions.
I had wished for our Shaykh—may Allah reward him with good—to speak about some of the etiquettes that a student of knowledge should observe when sitting with the scholars. And I benefited from our Shaykh—may Allah reward him with good—by learning some of those etiquettes... I want to remind my brothers of them, even though I had wished to hear them fromThe Shaykh : ; but he refused to do so—may Allah reward him with good—to teach us an etiquette by that refusal, that we might learn etiquette from him. So I say, O my brothers: Among the etiquettes I benefited from our Shaykh is that each one of us should strive to select his question before asking it, and to focus on his question, and not to interrupt others, and not to interrupt others who may be in the state of speaking withThe Shaykh : , and not to interrupt the scholars either when they are in the state of speaking or explaining to others.
Likewise, some of the brothers askThe Shaykh : a question and then turn away from it, and do not focus on it. And this has happened often, and we have seen it: the student of knowledge asks a question and does not focus on it when the answer is given to him. This is one of the matters in which we fall short.
Likewise, we fall into some violations, such as standing up, as mentioned byThe Shaykh : . Our Shaykh—may Allah reward him with good—does not like for people to stand up for him in a manner of showing respect. And also the harshness that some of the brothers display, or the harshness that appears in the questions of some of the brothers; there is in it some dryness, harshness, and lack of etiquette with the scholars. And we have felt this repeatedly.
All of this, everything I have said, O my brothers, we have experienced through our sessions with our noble Shaykh—may Allah reward him with good. And I hope, first from myself and then from my brothers, that we be mindful of such matters, and that we be polite with our scholars, and that we strive to ask them focused questions, and that when we ask them, we do not let our minds wander far.
This is what I wished to point out, and I hope fromThe Shaykh : if he has a comment on that, that he would gift us with it, and may Allah reward him with good.

The Shaykh: ... And prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions. I have thanks and an observation. As for the thanks, it is for the kind guidance and reminder of some of the etiquettes that students of knowledge should observe and care for with due care that you heard. And in support of this speech, I remind you of his saying—peace and blessings be upon him:
He is not one of us who does not have mercy on our young and does not respect our elders. ليس منَّا من لم يرحم صغيرنا ، ويُوقِّر كبيرنا ، ويعرف لعالمنا حقَّه
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1919Hasan (Darussalam)
. People are at two extremes in their regard for this last phrase; some of them reach, in their regard for it and their recognition of the scholar's right, a degree of exaltation that is not prescribed in the Shari'ah of Islam. And of that is what you heard at the beginning of this kind, blessed session—Allah willing—of the etiquette of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with the master of all mankind; for they did not stand up for him because they knew his dislike of that. So who are these scholars who are content for their followers, students, and seekers to stand up for them? This is an exaltation that no human being deserves, and if any human being deserved it, it would be the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) who is most worthy of it. And since he was not [to be treated thus], then no one after him (peace and blessings be upon him) will be.
And on the contrary, there are people who treat their scholars as an equal treats an equal, and a peer treats a peer. And this is a neglect of etiquette. The scholars should be honored because Allah has honored them, but within the limits of the Shari'ah. And of that is what you just heard. And the most important of all that is that they are to be obeyed and not disobeyed, because of what you know of his saying—peace and blessings be upon him:
The scholars are the heirs of the prophets. العلماء ورثة الأنبياء
.
This speech is as thanks for that advice.
