Etiquette of Asking the Shaykh

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the previous gathering, we were unable to answer most of the questions because the majority of the time was spent on the speech we delivered before the answers. Now, a sheet reminds me that it contains what suggests its author is extremely thirsty, meaning he filled a page or two with questions. This means there will be no room for the others. Therefore, I ask each of you to write down only one question so that we can be fair. We will not be able to do otherwise because the questions will be numerous and very numerous. If one person is satisfied with just one question, we still will not be able to answer them all, because no matter how long we take, it will be an hour and a half or two hours at most. If one person, for example, fills a page or two with questions, it is absolutely impossible to answer the remaining questions. So, I ask for contentment and economy, and to leave selfishness aside. Now, O Allah.
The student : How are you?

The Shaykh : Welcome. And one more thing before the questions: I remind you, and the reminder benefits the believers, that one of you should choose the question that concerns him most to start with, which is creed. You are descending, and this is naturally a practice we take from many authentic hadiths, such as the hadith of Jibril (peace be upon him) in the well-known story in the two Sahihs, when he came in the form of a man whom none of those present knew, and he was not a traveler because he was wearing white clothes, and so on, as is known. The important point is that he asked about faith, Islam, and excellence in worship. Then, at the end, he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
do you know who that was who asked about such and such?” He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: `That was Jibreel who came to teach you your religion.` أتدرون من السَّائل ؟ قالوا الله ورسوله أعلم ، قال : ذاك جبريل جاءكم يعلمكم دينكم
Musnad Ahmad 184Sahih (Darussalam)
So, you must ask about what relates to the religion, naturally, but about what concerns you from it as much as possible. Of course, every person differs from another. Perhaps a person with a legal culture finds it difficult to understand a verse or a hadith, so he asks about it. And perhaps another does not have this culture, but he needs to learn about what relates to creed, the oneness of Allah, the obligatory acts of prayer, or the things that invalidate the ablution, for example. In any case, every person asks about what concerns him.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : ... O Shaykh Ahmad, do we start answering, or do we wait a little?
The student : We start answering.

The Shaykh: Yes.
The student : We start answering.

The Shaykh: In the name of Allah.

The questioner : ... O Abu Abd al-Rahman, Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) says:
Allah eliminates what He wills or confirms, and with Him is the Mother of the Book. يَمْحُو اللَّهُ مَا يَشَاءُ وَيُثْبِتُ وَعِنْدَهُ أُمُّ الْكِتَابِ
[Ar-Ra'd 13:39]
... A hadith poses a difficulty for us, meaning that
Indeed, one of you إن أحدكم
Then the angel is sent to him; and he is commanded with four things: to write his provision, his lifespan, and whether he is wretched or happy. ثم يرسل إليه الملك ؛ فيُؤمر بأربع : بكتب رزقه ، وأجله ، وشقي أو سعيد
Does this mean that the wretched one or the happy one means that he is to the Fire forever, or that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) knew with His eternal knowledge that this would be such and such? The answer ...?

The Shaykh : Look, how many sheets are in ... your question ... .
The student : Heh.
