What is the meaning of His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He): “And We will set up the balances of justice on the Day of Resurrection”?

The questioner : Regarding His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
And We place the scales of justice ونضع الموازين القسط
[Al-Anbya 21:47]
, Ibn Kathir mentioned in his *Tafsir* regarding this verse that it is possible that the plural form of “balances” is due to the multitude of deeds; meaning, because of the variety of deeds. Another opinion is that it is a single balance; meaning, it may be several balances, or it may be a single balance.

The Shaykh : This is based on the principle by which we answer: Is this a legal ruling that we must know precisely? The answer is no. “Balances” is the plural of “balance,” so there is no impediment to there being several balances, just as there are several balances in this world. The Hereafter is not measured by the matters of this world. So, when a report about the unseen like this comes, we do not say: “Balances” means “a balance”; because that would be denying the text of the Qur'an. So we leave it as it is and believe in it, and Allah is sufficient for the believers in battle.
And with this much, it is sufficient for today; because I see myself as congested.
And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
