The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to frequently visit al-Baqi'. So, if we visit the graves, do the deceased benefit from this visit after we greet them?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Regarding the graves... does it mean that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), before his passing, when he went to al-Baqi' and returned, visited them and greeted them, and he used to visit them constantly? So, in our visiting of the graves, meaning for the one who has family, his father, his mother, and so on, or Muslims in general, do they benefit from our visit to them after we greet them, "Peace be upon you, people of the abode," to the end of the supplication? Also, we walked on the road and passed by a cemetery... it is the same issue. And you pass by and greet them every time, every time, and so on. So this is the question, O honorable Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Every time you pass by a grave, greet them. As for whether they benefit, the answer is: just as if you supplicate for your Muslim brother in his absence, if Allah accepts your supplication, he benefits. Likewise, the deceased benefit if our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) accepts the supplication of the one passing by them and greeting them. As for more than this, we have nothing.

The questioner : They benefit, even if you supplicate...

The Shaykh : This is it.

The questioner : But there is nothing beyond that, except for the obligation of admonition... All right, may Allah reward you with good.

The questioner : Our Shaykh, regarding the question, meaning every time you pass by and you intend and specifically choose to visit, we greet them, because we heard the statement that it is not permissible to greet the graves. It was said that it is not permissible to greet the graves if you are intending to visit?

The Shaykh : Likewise.

The questioner : May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : And you as well.
