Women’s Visiting of Graves

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 1981 )
Q: I heard from some guides that it is categorically not permissible for women to visit the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I informed my wife and my mother, but they did not accept this. I hope to be informed as soon as possible.
You are content with that, I hope you will inform me as soon as possible.

A: Visiting graves without making a special journey to them is a recommended practice (sunnah) for men, including the grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It is recommended for men to visit it with the prescribed visit, without making a special journey to it. The prescribed visit involves supplicating for the deceased for forgiveness and mercy, and taking a lesson and admonition, and remembering death and what lies beyond it of terrors, bliss, or punishment. If a man visits the graves of Muslims, he says:
As-salamu ‘alaykum ahlad-diyar minal-mu’minina wal- muslimin, wa inna insha’ Allah bikum lahiqun, nas’alul-laha lana wa lakumul-‘afiyah (Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of the abodes, believers and Muslims, and we will join you soon if Allah wills. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you).السلام عليكم أهل الديار من المؤمنين والمسلمين، وإنا إن شاء الله بكم لاحقون، نسأل الله لنا ولكم العافية
Sunan Ibn Majah 1547Sahih (Darussalam)
. If he visits the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the graves of his two companions, Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he greets them and sends blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and expresses satisfaction with Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). As for women, visiting graves in general, including the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), is prohibited for them. It is not part of the Sunnah; rather, it is not permissible for them to visit his grave (peace and blessings be upon him) or any other graves. This is based on what was narrated by Abu Dawud , al-Tirmidhi , and Ibn Majah from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed women who visit graves and those who make mosques and lamps at themأن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لعن زائرات القبور والمتخذين عليها المساجد والسرج
. And what was narrated by al-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him):
Abu Huraira said God's messenger cursed women who visited gravesأن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لعن زوارات القبور
Mishkat al-Masabih 1770
. And al-Tirmidhi said: This is a good, authentic hadith.
And what is established from the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
I had prohibited you from visiting graves, so visit themكنت نهيتكم عن زيارة القبور ألا فزوروها
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 14:141
is an address to men only, and he permitted them to visit them. Women are not included in this, because that is specified by the hadiths cursing women who visit graves, which came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from three of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). And what was narrated from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) regarding women visiting graves is abrogated by the authentic hadiths mentioned. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
