A word on the error of the followers in racing the imam in saying "Ameen," and an explanation of the hadith: (When the imam says "Ameen," then say "Ameen")
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Before questions come to us, I want to remind you of a common and repeated error in every loud prayer. This error is that the imam in the loud prayer barely says: before the followers rush to say: . This is an error; I mean this rushing and haste in saying "Ameen" is an error because it contradicts the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 936Sahih (Al-Albani), and in another narration: Sunan Abi Dawud 936Sahih (Al-Albani). His saying (peace be upon him): is like follow his "Ameen" with your "Ameen." Similarly, in another hadith in "Sahih Muslim": Sunan an-Nasa'i 1061Sahih (Darussalam).
Therefore, it is obligatory for the worshippers, when the imam says:[Al-Fatihah 1:7], to be patient. If the imam says aloud, as is the Sunnah, the matter is clear for them in determining when to say "Ameen." That is when the imam finishes saying: ; at that time, the followers begin saying: .
As for when the imam does not say aloud, as is the case with many imams of the Hanafi school and others; at that time, the follower must use independent legal reasoning and estimation. When he hears the imam say: , he estimates a time sufficient for the imam to say in his heart: , and then he says: .
In a simple, easy way, when the imam says:, you, the follower, take a breath. By the amount of time you take a breath, he will have pronounced ; so you then say: .
And upon you be peace and Allah's mercy and blessings.

The questioner : ... .
The Shaykh : Hello, how are you?
The questioner : May Allah keep you safe.
The Shaykh : This hadith explains the virtue of this easy, simple Sunnah. Its virtue is that the one who says it, as the Messenger (peace be upon him) commanded, will have all his sins forgiven by Allah:Sunan Abi Dawud 936Sahih (Al-Albani). But the forgiveness of these sins through this Sunnah is not achieved by racing the imam; because in that case, the one saying "Ameen" has preceded the imam and reversed the saying of the Messenger (peace be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 936Sahih (Al-Albani). He has done so if the imam did not say "Ameen" or before the imam said "Ameen," you said "Ameen." The hadith says after the imam says "Ameen," then you say "Ameen."
Therefore, we must pay attention to this hadith for two reasons. First: because it simplifies the method of not racing the imam in saying "Ameen"; it simplifies and explains. Second: it realizes the saying of the Messenger (peace be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 1236. Following the imam is not done by racing him, but by following him.
So I hope you will note this and remember it; first for yourselves, and second for others. Because until now, I do not enter a mosque and pray in congregation, whether as imam or follower, without finding that all the people make this common error. The imam barely finishes saying: before the mosque is filled with .
The questioner : They invent supplications, professor.
Another questioner : ... in supplications that are not established, he says "Ameen" to his supplication while he is not ... with the imam.
The Shaykh : Yes, here there is a difference between a person who responds to a supplication from his own side, which is not permissible of course, because it is an invention and innovation in religion, and contradicting the text and reversing it. We, as a group that follows the Sunnah, pay attention that this supplication has no basis. But more importantly, we must pay attention to his saying (peace be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 936Sahih (Al-Albani). When we hear the imam say: , we are patient until we hear the imam's "Ameen" or we estimate if he does not say "Ameen" aloud; we estimate that the imam has now finished saying: ; so we say: . Why? First: to implement this command . Second: to deserve this forgiveness, and forgiveness is the most valuable thing a Muslim obtains in this worldly life. Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says: [Adh-Dhariyat 51:56]. If we worship Allah, we deserve His forgiveness and pleasure. And this deserving is only achieved by following the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), especially in what He commanded us.
This is what I wanted to point out, and I repeat the request that you note this in all your prayers when the prayer is loud; so that you do not sin by contradicting the command of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in his saying:Sunan Abi Dawud 936Sahih (Al-Albani) first, and so that you do not lose this virtue, which is the forgiveness of sins due to your coincidence with the saying of the angels. What does the coincidence of the Muslim with the angels mean? It means that the angels, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) described them in His saying: [At-Tahrim 66:6]. If we were commanded not to race the imam; what do you think of the noble angels; do they race the imam or follow him? No doubt they follow him. And the meaning of this following is that the angels do not say: except after the imam says: . If we also say: , our "Ameen" coincides with the "Ameen" of the angels, and in this coincidence lies the deserving of the forgiveness of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). This is a reminder, and the reminder benefits the believers.
