The questioner : The reality is that the noble Companions set a wonderful example in their understanding of Islam, their application of Islam, and their calling to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). They were the best nation brought forth for people, whereas before Islam they were weak, scattered, and fragmented. Their weakness reached such a point that they were defeated before Abraha, the owner of the elephant, which is well known. Yet, after they understood Islam and the Messenger’s (peace and blessings be upon him) call, which was revealed from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), they shook the thrones of Kisra and Caesar. One of them would stand before 'Umar ibn al-Khattab while he was delivering the sermon in the mosque and say, "No hearing and no obedience to the Commander of the Faithful," when he perceived in his opinion that 'Umar had fallen short in the rights of the Muslims. His knowledge made him rebel and speak the word of truth, fearing no blame from anyone for the sake of Allah. 'Umar inquired of him: "Why, O brother of the Arabs?" He said: "Because you are wearing two garments while we are wearing one." 'Umar said to his son 'Abdullah: "Stand up, O 'Abdullah." 'Abdullah stood up and informed the people that the garment which was 'Abdullah’s share, 'Umar had gifted to his father 'Umar, and it had reached him, and then he came to deliver the sermon. He said: "Now, hearing and obedience to the Commander of the Faithful."
The point is that the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were not exploited by anyone, nor could anyone introduce into Islam what is not in it; because they were possessed of knowledge and insight. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) also informed of this, saying to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):[Yusuf 12:108], so the followers of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) were possessed of insight and knowledge.
As for now, Muslims claim affiliation with Islam based on the imitation of fathers and ancestors. Therefore, you see that groups deviating from Islam in an obvious and clear manner can exploit this Muslim people by appearing in an Islamic guise, by standing in prayer, or by wearing the garments of ihram, or by circumambulating the Ka'bah, or by saying on the radio and television that they take pride in Islam. This statement of theirs numbs this people, and they applaud them due to their ignorance of Islam.
Allah and His Messenger informed about such groups, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 50a. They speak and claim Islam just as these people claim Islam, but they do not act according to Islam. Rather, they judge and follow laws that are contrary to Islam, which are a fierce war against Islam. The Jews and Christians say that the rulings of the Qur'an are barbaric and unfit for governance. Cutting off the hand of the thief is barbaric, killing the one who killed is barbaric, and stoning the adulterer is barbaric. These people who claim Islam agree with them in this and reject the rulings of the Qur'an. Yet, they claim Islam, and the sons of Muslims applaud them. All of this is the result of the Muslims' ignorance of the reality of Islam.
Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) described that group in the time of the Messenger (peace be upon him) in His saying:[An-Nisa 4:60]. These are the people who claim that they believed in Allah and the Messenger, and they pray, and they wear the garments of ihram, and they circumambulate the Ka'bah, and they claim Islam. Yet, when it comes to judgment, they resort to the tyrants, to the laws of disbelief and misguidance whose source is Satan, [An-Nisa 4:60-61]; so it is not permissible for these people to...

This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me

Allah and His Messenger informed about such groups, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Never a Prophet had been sent before me by Allah towards his nation who had not among his people (his) disciples and companions who followed his ways and obeyed his command. Then there came after them their successors who said whatever they did not practise

Have you not seen those who claim to have believed in what was revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before you? They wish to refer legislation to Taghut, while they were commanded to reject it; and Satan wishes to lead them far astray.
