Continuation of the discussion: Are all the prophets (peace be upon them) infallible?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We return to the matter. Since there is no text in the Book or the Sunnah stating that the prophets are infallible—meaning, free from any error—we can move the research to another aspect of it. We mention and recall—and peace and Allah’s mercy be upon you—that in the Qur’an there are many verses in which our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) recounts that some of His prophets and messengers did things for which the least that can be said is that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) rebuked them for them. Some of them were not only rebuked by our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) for them, but He also informed that they sinned and repented. Some of them wept because of the errors they committed, such as the story of David...

Eid Abbasi :
And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah].
[Sad 38:24]
.

The Shaykh : And like Adam (peace be upon him) and his story with the tree, and the prohibition by the Lord of the Worlds for him to eat from it, and that he repented to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and that Allah accepted his repentance. And the story of Solomon when he was struck with a beating
striking [their] legs and necks.
[Sad 38:33]
, yes, the story of Moses
So Moses struck him and killed him.
, the story of Noah:
My Lord, do not leave upon the earth from among the disbelievers an inhabitant.
[Nuh 71:26]
, and even the story of the Messenger (peace be upon him) in more than one incident, when—for example—this was revealed concerning him:
He frowned and turned away, because the blind man came to him.
, and when He (the Exalted) said:
May Allah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give them permission
[At-Tawbah 9:43]
,
If not for a decree from Allah that preceded, you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment.
[Al-Anfal 8:68]
, and so on. Many of the incidents and stories that Allah recounts in the Qur’an about the prophets are explicit that they did things which it was fitting for them not to do. These are explicit matters that the prophets are not infallible in the absolute sense, but they are undoubtedly infallible in two matters:
The first matter is conveying the message; because if we assume that they are not infallible in conveying the message, it means that the purpose of sending them as
messengers as bringers of good tidings and warners
[An-Nisa 4:165]
was not achieved. Especially since the previous verse says:
announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people
[Al-Ma'idah 5:67]
. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) protected him from the people so that they would not kill him. Why? So that he would be able to convey the message. So for Him to protect him from negligence or error in conveying the message; conveying the message is more primary and more primary. This is the one thing on which all Muslims agreed that the prophets are infallible.
And the second thing is that they are infallible from falling into major sins. In reality, there is no explicit evidence for this; rather, it is derived from what sound reason requires from observing the person whom Allah chooses and selects from among people as a prophet and messenger. There is no doubt that it should be at the highest and most exalted ranks and stations of perfection so that he can approach people with his good character and good conduct among them when he conveys to them the call of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And assuming that they commit some major sins and that it is permissible for them, this is what repels people. As we see completely regarding some scholars who do not act upon their knowledge, you find that people do not trust them and do not pay attention to their sayings. So the requirement of being a prophet chosen by his Lord, and the requirement of it being necessary for him to convey his Lord’s message to people, is that he should be far from every sin or character that repels people from him.
This is what can be said regarding the infallibility of the prophets. As for saying more than that, and that they are absolutely infallible as some scholars say, especially the Sufis among them; this is contrary to the Book and the Sunnah, and contrary to the many incidents of the prophets whose stories Allah has related to us in His Book.
This is what I have on this issue, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds.
