Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Have they not looked at the sky above them, how We built it and adorned it, and it has no cracks?”

The Shaykh : And I think that in the previous lesson we stopped at the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Qaf 50:6-8]. So in His saying: [Qaf 50:6], the pronoun refers to those who denied the Resurrection and said, “If we become dust, is that a far return?” So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, urged them with rebuke to look at the sky above us: how did We build it? We built it with strength and made it a protected ceiling, and We made it a level, sound ceiling , with no cracks, fissures, or defects throughout the ages, which no one knows except Allah, Mighty and Majestic. And His saying, the Exalted: , He attributed the building to Himself because He, Mighty and Majestic, is the One who created it. His building of it is not like the building of people for ceilings, where they bring workers, baskets, picks, and bricks. No, His building of it is that He rose to the sky while it was smoke [Fussilat 41:11], a single word by which everything was completed.
: With what did He adorn it? Allah, Mighty and Majestic, adorned it with lamps, with stars. How beautiful the sky is if you are in a desert far from electric lights and you know these shining stars, you would know the extent of this adornment. So Allah adorned it with stars, and Allah created these stars for three purposes: adornment for the sky, missiles for the devils, and signs by which they are guided, as He, the Exalted, said: [An-Nahl 16:16].
[Qaf 50:6]: Meaning, the sky has no cracks, meaning no fissures that would defect it and lead it to destruction. Rather, it is strong and firm. Allah, the Exalted, said: [Al-Mulk 67:3-4]. Here we ask a question: How many are the heavens? Their number is seven by the text of the Qur'an [Al-Mu'minun 23:86], one above the other, and the distances between them are very far. And every heaven has inhabitants who dwell in it from the angels by the command of Allah. And in the hadith of the Mi'raj, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Adam and saw the prophets in the heavens on different levels. So the entire sky is inhabited by inhabitants. The entire sky is inhabited from the lowest to the seventh, and there is nothing in it of defect, cracks, or deficiency. Rather, it is firm until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, folds it on the Day of Resurrection [Al-Anbya 21:104].
