The Shaykh : So what are the things that break the fast? The things that break the fast are eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse. These three are mentioned in a single verse:
Now have intercourse with them فَالْآنَ بَاشِرُوهُنَّ
What is this? Sexual intercourse. "Approach them" means the women.
and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink وَابْتَغُوا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
This is eating and drinking.
until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الْخَيْطُ الْأَبْيَضُ مِنَ الْخَيْطِ الْأَسْوَدِ مِنَ الْفَجْرِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
"Until it becomes clear to you," and it did not say "until it appears." He said:
Until it becomes clear حَتَّى يَتَبَيَّنَ
Even if we were to doubt whether the dawn has appeared or not, are we permitted to eat and drink? Yes, we eat and drink. If it becomes clear afterwards that the dawn had appeared, do we have to make up the fast? No, we do not have to make it up. Why? Because Allah has permitted us to eat and drink until it becomes clear. We are now looking at the horizon, and we are in doubt; one person says it has appeared, and another says the dawn has not appeared. We eat, as long as we are in doubt. And if it becomes clear that the dawn appeared before we ate, we do not have to make up the fast. Glory be to Allah, we eat during the day and do not have to make up the fast. We say that when we ate, we believed that we were in the night, and Allah has permitted us to do so until it becomes clear to us. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said...
