The evidence is that eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse invalidate the fast.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Okay, what is the evidence that eating, drinking, and sexual intercourse invalidate the fast?

The questioner :
It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. أحل لكم ليلة الصيام الرفث إلى نسائكم هن لباس لكم وأنتم لباس لهن
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
.

The Shaykh :
So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat فالآن باشروهن وابتغوا ما كتب الله لكم وكلوا
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
.

The questioner :
and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset واشربوا حتى يتبين لكم الخيط الأبيض من الخيط الأسود من الفجر ثم أتموا الصيام إلى الليل
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
.

The Shaykh : Well done. We mentioned that Allah referred to sexual intercourse by saying
Approach them باشروهن
, and this indicates a quality of modesty and etiquette. What is it?

The questioner : That sexual intercourse is something one feels shy about.

The Shaykh : That a person should use euphemisms for what he feels shy about and not mention it explicitly, except...

The questioner : Except when necessity calls for it.

The Shaykh : Except when necessity calls for it. May Allah bless you. Okay, regarding sexual intercourse, brother...

The questioner : The same verse.

The Shaykh : I say that sexual intercourse invalidates the fast. Does sexual intercourse only invalidate the fast, or is there something else?

The questioner : Other than sexual intercourse? It is sexual intercourse and its consequences.

The Shaykh : Does it invalidate the fast? We say to the one who had intercourse: your fast is invalid, and you must make it up. Only make it up.

The questioner : No expiation.

The Shaykh : Expiation is for every fast.

The questioner : In the obligatory fast, of course, in Ramadan.
