The Meaning of the Muslim's Saying: (Peace be upon you).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So, does the meaning of the Muslim's saying "Peace be upon you" mean "May Allah be upon you"? Or does it mean "May the mercy of peace be upon you"? No, the meaning of the one who greets saying "Peace be upon you" is supplicating for safety, asking Allah to keep you safe from evil in your religion and your worldly life, in your person and your family, in your home, and in your wealth. It is safety from everything. "Peace be upon you" is the meaning with which a person begins addressing his brother when he meets him. "Peace be upon you" means that you are asking Allah to keep him safe from every calamity, from every affliction, from every evil, and from every disliked thing. This is the meaning of the greeting, along with what it includes of salutation, welcome, and openness toward the person. For this reason, if a person meets you and does not greet you, something arises in your heart against him. But if he greets you, what is in your heart disappears, and you know that he is your brother and that he loves you. Accordingly, the meaning of "Peace be upon you" is: I ask Allah for your safety from every calamity, in your religion, in your worldly life, in your body, in your family, in your wealth, in your community, and in everything.
