Is there a contradiction between the saying of Allah the Exalted: (There is no compulsion in religion) and His saying (peace and blessings be upon him):

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you peace.

The questioner : A question.

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner : Regarding the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
Let there be no compulsion in religion لا إكراه في الدين
Sunan Abi Dawud 2682Sahih (Al-Albani)
and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
I have been commanded to fight the people until they bear witness to La ilaha illallah أمرت أن أقاتل الناس حتى يشهدوا ألا إله إلا الله
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3983Sahih (Darussalam)
how is the verse and the hadith reconciled?

The Shaykh : Do you not know that there are three rulings in the Shari'ah: either Islam, or the payment of the jizyah from the hand while in a state of humiliation, or fighting?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Do you know this?

The questioner: I know.

The Shaykh : Fine, do not stop at one hadith; take the rulings from a collection of hadiths. If you know that there is a jizyah, that means the disbeliever remains on his religion, so there is no contradiction with the saying of Allah the Exalted:
There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion لا إكراه في الدين
[Al-Baqarah 2:256]
He is only compelled to pay the jizyah if he chooses to remain on his religion. Is that clear?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : So there is no contradiction.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh : And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
