The questioner : The questioner says: I pray the obligatory prayer while standing, but I pray the voluntary prayers on a chair. Which is better: praying on the ground or on a chair?

The Shaykh : As for the obligatory prayer, it is not permissible for a person to pray it on a chair if he is able to stand, because standing in the obligatory prayer is a pillar if one has the ability. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, said:
Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient. حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:238]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Umar ibn al-Husayn:
offer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting condition: if you are then at your side صل قائماً، فإن لم تستطع فقاعداً، فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنب
Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani)
As for the voluntary prayer, its matter is broad. If a person prays it standing, that is better. If he prays it sitting without an excuse, he gets half the reward of the one who prays standing. If he prays it sitting due to an excuse, there is no blame on him, and his reward is completed if it is his habit to pray the voluntary prayer standing, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever is ill or travels is written the same reward as when he was healthy and resident. من مرض أو سافر كتب له ما كان يعمل صحيحاً مقيماً
.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
