The questioner : I see a few of the worshippers, after finishing the prayer and when exiting, wiping their hands on the wall surrounding the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and wiping their chests and faces. Is this among the innovations? And if it is among the innovations, I ask for advice for such people. May Allah reward you with good, O honorable Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Yes, this is among the innovations without a doubt, because it is not prescribed to wipe anything in this world from the buildings except wiping two corners: the first is the Black Stone and the second is the Yemeni Corner, and both are in the Sacred Ka'bah. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wiping all the corners, so he disapproved of it. Mu'awiyah said to him: "Nothing of the House is neglected". Ibn Abbas said: "
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
[Al-Ahzab 33:21]
And I did not see the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiping any of the corners except the two corners"
, meaning by that the Black Stone and the Yemeni Corner. So Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) stopped wiping all the corners. You will find that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) disapproved of Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wiping the sides of the Ka'bah for which there is no report from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he used to wipe them. So what about other walls? The wisdom of the two Yemeni corners in the Ka'bah being wiped while the other two are not is that the other two are not on the foundations of Ibrahim, because the Ka'bah was more extended toward the north than it is now. But when Quraysh wanted to rebuild it, their funds were insufficient, so they decided to build this part and leave the other part. They chose to leave the northern part because it does not contain the Stone. Thus, we know that the Hijr (Hijr Isma'il) that exists now is not, as the common people claim, the Hijr of Isma'il, for this Hijr was only established recently in the age of ignorance. How can it be the Hijr of Isma'il? But it is called al-Hijr and al-Hatim, and is never attributed to Isma'il. My advice to these people who rub themselves against the chamber of the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is to fear Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and to worship Allah by what He has prescribed, not by their desires. For Allah the Exalted says:
But if the Truth had followed their inclinations, the heavens and the earth and whoever is in them would have been ruined وَلَوِ اتَّبَعَ الْحَقُّ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ السَّمَوَاتُ وَالأَرْضُ وَمَنْ فِيهِنَّ
[Al-Mu'minun 23:71]
And every person who worships in contradiction to His Shari'ah, his deed is returned to him, and he is sinful for it if he knows that it contradicts the Shari'ah. By the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) in what is authentic from him:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected. من عمل عملاً ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
And in another wording:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected. من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
, meaning it is returned to him.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
