During the tashahhud, does one move the index finger until the end of the tashahhud, or only during the tawhid? And what is the clarification on this?

The questioner : During the tashahhud, does one move the index finger until the end of the tashahhud, or only during the tawhid? And what is the clarification on this? May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : The index finger is raised and not joined with the other four fingers, because the four fingers—the little finger, the ring finger, the middle finger, and the thumb—are joined together, and the index finger remains open. Alternatively, the thumb is joined with the middle finger, and the index finger remains open. As for moving it, the closest view to me is that it is moved only when mentioning the supplication, as it came in the hadith:
He moves it, supplicating with it.
So when you say:
Peace be upon you, O Prophet
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1171Sahih (Darussalam)
this is a supplication, so move it. And
Peace be upon us and on the slaves of Allah, who are salih.
Muwatta Malik 53:8
likewise, and
Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad)
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1292Hasan (Darussalam)
likewise,
O Allah: bless Muhammad and his family
Sahih Muslim 406a
likewise, and
let him seek refuge with Allah from four things: From the torment of Hell, from the torment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the Fitnah (tribulation) of Masihud-Dajjal.
Sunan Ibn Majah 909Sahih (Darussalam)
likewise, you raise it. It is raised only during the supplication as a sign of the exaltedness of the One being supplicated to, who is Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). And other than that, it remains open, neither joined nor raised.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
