Discussion of the sixth instance in which backbiting is permissible, which is seeking assistance in removing an evil.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The sixth and final type: he said, "And whoever seeks assistance in removing an evil, such as when a person finds in his neighborhood, for example, a man who has opened his home as a tavern, or a brothel, or something similar. If the person is strong and his brother is weak, and he alone cannot do anything, he goes to his neighbor So-and-so, and his neighbor So-and-so, and so on, saying that So-and-so is doing such and such. Let us cooperate in the best manner to speak to him, or for example, write a petition regarding him or something similar. He also mentioned this person, even if he is concealing himself; he is not an open sinner whose sin is public, so that he would fall under one of the previous categories. He is concealing it, but his scent has come out... Therefore, it is permissible for one who wants to seek the help of the people of good and righteousness to cut off the evil of this person to say, 'He was doing such and such.' All of this is backbiting from the linguistic perspective, but it is not backbiting from the legal perspective. In this hadith, which we are currently discussing, an example was given of one of the six types, which is the permissibility of mentioning a person with what is in him, if the intention is not "to expose the faults of people" as is said today, but rather the intention was to describe him and explain his condition to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) when he asked them, saying:
Who is your chief, O Banu Salama? من سيدكم يا بني سلمة ؟
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 14:38
We said, "Jadd ibn Qays, though we are stingy with him"
