The Shaykh : This hadith narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon a young man who was dying, meaning in his final moments, and said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): . He was asking him about his attachment to his Lord. The young man said: “I hope in Allah (Mighty and Majestic), O Messenger of Allah, and I fear my sins.” So in this state, at the end of his life, he was living between the two states of fear and hope; he feared his sins because he acknowledged that he had been extravagant toward himself and had committed sins against himself; he did not deny this reality, so he feared the consequence of that, that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) would hold him accountable for it. But at the same time, he hoped in Allah and expected Him to treat him with His grace and not hold him accountable for his sins. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) answered him immediately; he said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 983Hasan (Darussalam), which is the place of deliverance from this world and the transition to the barzakh (the interval between death and resurrection) Jami` at-Tirmidhi 983Hasan (Darussalam). So in this hadith, there is an exhortation for the Muslim to have a good opinion of his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He), and to hope for His forgiveness (Mighty and Majestic) for the sins of this servant.
In the next lesson, there will be explicit hadiths exhorting the Muslim to live with a good opinion of his Lord (Blessed and Exalted is He); because Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is in accordance with His servant's opinion of Him.
