The Shaykh’s explanation of the athar of Khalid ibn 'Umar al-'Adawi, in which he said

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The second hadith, which is also authentic. It is narrated from Khalid ibn 'Umar al-'Adawi, who said: "Utbah ibn Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us, and he was the governor of Basra. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: 'As for what follows, the world has announced its severance. Listen! This is the sermon of a man among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Naturally, he spoke in Arabic, but unfortunately, we barely understand anything of it. He was admonishing the people, and as you heard, he was the governor in Basra. He said: 'As for what follows, the world has announced its severance and has turned away swiftly, and nothing remains of it except a little, like the little remaining in a vessel, which its owner gathers up. And you are moving from it to a home that will not cease, so move with the best of what is with you. For it has been mentioned to us that a stone is thrown from the edge of Hellfire and falls into it for seventy years without reaching a bottom. By Allah, you will fill it. Are you not astonished? And it has been mentioned to us that the distance between two of the doors of Paradise is a journey of forty years, and a day will surely come when it is crowded with people. And I have seen myself' Here is the point of interest: 'And I have seen myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), having no food except the leaves of trees, until our mouths became sore. So I cut a cloak and divided it between myself and Sa'd ibn Malik; I wrapped myself in half of it, and Sa'd wrapped himself in half of it. And not one of us today has become a governor over a region of the regions. And I seek refuge in Allah from being great in my own self and small in the sight of Allah.' He said: It was narrated by Muslim.
He explains the obscure words of the hadith, or some of the obscure words. To be precise, he says: "Azhinat" with a long alif means "it has announced its severance." "Bisurm" is with a dammah on the sad and a sukun on the ra, meaning severance and perishing. "Hadhā'ah" is with a hā' without a dot, open, then a dāl with two dots, doubled and elongated, meaning swift. "Al-subābah" with a dammah on the sad is the small remainder of a thing. "Yatasabbuha" with a shaddah on the mīm before the hā' means he gathers it up. "Al-kadhiẓ" with a fathah on the kāf and two dāl with two dots is the much, the full. We return to the sermon of this noble Companion, Utbah ibn Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him), who praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "The world has announced its severance" We know that "surm" is severance, and the intended meaning here is clear: it is tending toward severance and perishing. It has announced its severance and turned away swiftly toward perishing. Since the matter is so, he admonishes his Companions and says, before continuing: "And nothing remains of it except a little, like the little remaining in a vessel, which its owner gathers up." Nothing remains of the world except a small amount. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him) indicates in some authentic hadiths that
Nothing remains of this world of yours, in relation to what has passed, except like the time between the 'Asr and Maghrib prayers. لم يبق من دنياكم هذه بالنسبة لما مضى إلا مثل ما بين صلاة العصر والمغرب
, this remaining portion of the world. And this is what this orator, the noble Utbah ibn Ghazwan, indicates when he says: "And nothing remains of it except a little, like the little remaining in a vessel, which its owner gathers up. And you are moving from it to a home that will not cease, so move with the best of what is with you." This means: make the world a farm for the Hereafter, and take from it provisions with which you provision yourselves for that home, the Hereafter, which will not cease, as is the nature of this world, since it is transient.
