Is it permissible to use the term "master"?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The questioner asks about a hadith that appears to contradict our previous ruling on the permissibility of using the word "master" as the Messenger (peace be upon him) used it for Sa'd ibn Mu'adh. There is another hadith that seems to conflict with this, but that is not the case upon careful examination. That hadith states that a group came to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to him: "You are our master and the son of our master." He responded to them by saying (peace be upon him):
The Master is Allah
. It is clear that he did not approve of their use of the term "master" for the one who is the master of all humanity (peace and blessings be upon him). Nevertheless, the apparent meaning of the hadith is that he did not approve of their saying to him: "You are our master." In another hadith, in a story similar to this, they said to him: "You are our master and the son of our master." He said to them:
Say what you say, or part of what you say, and do not let Satan lead you astray
. The hadith before this is explained in light of this. When he said to them:
The Master is Allah
, it is as if (peace be upon him) sensed that these people were sanctifying him with this term and elevating him above the status that Allah placed him in. This is not permissible by the Shari'ah, as explicitly stated in the hadith:
Do not elevate me above the status in which Allah placed me
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 64:726
. So it is as if (peace be upon him) heard from the first group this term veiled with something of sanctity, from which he feared it might lead them to shirk (associating partners with Allah), or at least to some degree of shirk. Therefore, he blocked the door for them and clarified to them that true lordship belongs only to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). So he said to them:
The Master is Allah
.
But this does not mean that it is not permissible for a Muslim to say to the Messenger (peace be upon him) that he is our master. How could it be, when he informed us in more than one authentic hadith that he is the master of people on the Day of Resurrection, and that Adam and all those below him will be under his banner (peace be upon him) on the Day of Resurrection? Rather, he wants us, when we use this term for him, and he is worthy of it, not to embellish it or mix it with any excess in his regard, from which the Messenger (peace be upon him) warned us in many hadiths. Among them is the hadith agreed upon by the two Shaykhs:
Do not extol me as the Christians extolled [Jesus] the son of Mary. I am merely a servant,’ so say: '[He is] Allah’s servant and His Messenger.’
Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah 329Sahih (Zubair `Aliza'i)
. This is what he (peace be upon him) feared when he heard such a term from some people. People are not all equal in this prohibition. So when the Messenger (peace be upon him) sensed something of this prohibition from some of them, he cut them off from this term and directed them to their Lord (Mighty and Majestic), who has absolute lordship over him. Therefore, he said to them:
The Master is Allah
. As for the other group, he treated them differently; he drew their attention to what might be feared from this usage. Therefore, he said to them:
Say what you have to say, or part of what you have to say, and do not let the devil make you his agents.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4806Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
The Messenger (peace be upon him) clarified for us the prohibition that might occur from praising him (peace be upon him), even with something in which he is involved, which is a complete attribute... or say: "O our master," but beware, lest this word lead you to say about him (peace be upon him) what is not permissible. And glory to Allah, the Prophet (peace be upon him), as Allah said:
(3) Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. (4) It is not but a revelation revealed,
[An-Najm 53:3-4]
. What the Messenger feared for his ummah (the Muslim community) has happened to the ummah, except for very few among them, who are those who constantly strive to adhere to the Sunnah and abandon the emotions that carry their owner away and know no limits. These emotions here corrupt a person's faith and thought. Therefore, you will find some people...
