Question:
A letter reached the program from one of our brother listeners. We presented some of his questions in a previous episode. In this episode, our brother al-Idrisi Mawlay Abd al-Rahman from the Kingdom of Morocco asks and says: Is it permissible for us to say "our master" for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) inside the prayer? What is the ruling on one who says it inside the prayer? And what is the ruling on one who does not say it inside the prayer? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
What is prescribed in the prayer is not to use the title "our master"; because it is not found in the texts. Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them to say:Sahih al-Bukhari 3370.
So what is prescribed is this, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them. But if a person says: "O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad," there is nothing wrong with it, and he has done nothing wrong; because Muhammad is the master of the children of Adam (peace and blessings be upon him). So whoever says it has done nothing wrong, and whoever leaves it out has done nothing wrong.
And the best is to leave it out in the tashahhud and in the adhan. One says: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught his Companions that. Bilal used to call the adhan with this, and so did Abu Mazhura. If a mu'adhdhin says: "I bear witness that our master Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," it is valid, but it is contrary to the Sunnah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say it this way, nor did he teach the Companions that.
And what is prescribed is to say: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah" in the adhan and the iqamah. But if he says: "Our master Muhammad," he is truthful, he is his master, but this was not prescribed. Muslims must adhere to what is established in acts of worship; because they are based on divine legislation.
So the Muslim must adhere to what has come from the Shari'ah in worship, and not add to it. In the tahiyyat, he says:Sunan an-Nasa'i 1292Hasan (Darussalam) as it came in the texts. In the adhan, he says: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and in the iqamah likewise.
And as for other than this, if he says: "I bear witness that our master Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," or "O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad," there is no blame on him; because he is the master of the children of Adam (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 4308Sahih (Darussalam).
So the point is: he is the best of creation (peace and blessings be upon him). But we must adhere to what has been prescribed for us, not adding and not subtracting; because this is what is befitting for us; due to his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying in the authentic hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, send blessings upon him and peace:Sahih Muslim 1718a Sahih Muslim 1718b.
So adhering to what He taught us and prescribed for us is what is befitting for us. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4607Sahih (Al-Albani) And the Lord (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: : [Al-Ahzab: 21] And He (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Al-Shura: 21].
So what is prescribed for Muslims is to adhere to what their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them and what He prescribed for them in words and deeds. Yes.

What is prescribed in the prayer is not to use the title "our master"; because it is not found in the texts. Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them to say:
Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.
So the Muslim must adhere to what has come from the Shari'ah in worship, and not add to it. In the tahiyyat, he says:
Alahumma salli 'ala Muhammad wa 'ala ali Muhammad (O Allah, send salah upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad)
And as for other than this, if he says: "I bear witness that our master Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," or "O Allah, send blessings upon our master Muhammad," there is no blame on him; because he is the master of the children of Adam (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I am the leader of the sons of Adam, and it is no boast
So the point is: he is the best of creation (peace and blessings be upon him). But we must adhere to what has been prescribed for us, not adding and not subtracting; because this is what is befitting for us; due to his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying in the authentic hadith, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, send blessings upon him and peace:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.
So adhering to what He taught us and prescribed for us is what is befitting for us. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Avoid novelties, for every novelty is an innovation, and every innovation is an error.
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern
Or have they other deities who have ordained for them a religion to which Allah has not consented?
So what is prescribed for Muslims is to adhere to what their Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them and what He prescribed for them in words and deeds. Yes.
