Is it permissible to make up the regular voluntary prayers?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Which of the sunnahs are made up?

The Shaykh : How? Which of the sunnahs?

The questioner : The sunnahs, the sunnahs, when they are missed.

The Shaykh : I understood, but I did not understand the second word?

The questioner : They are made up, meaning, they are made up after their time has passed.

The Shaykh : Ah, so you are saying which of the sunnahs are made up?

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : The ruling on the regular voluntary prayers, whether they are made up or not, is the same as the ruling on the obligatory prayers. So if you already have detailed knowledge regarding making up the obligatory prayers, then apply that same knowledge to the regular voluntary prayers. And if you have not previously heard or read about it, then I must explain it to you. Certainly, you will say: "Explain it," even if you were already knowledgeable [The Shaykh laughs!].
The regular voluntary prayers are tied to the obligatory prayers. If a Muslim deliberately delays one of the five prayers until its time has passed, doing so intentionally and on purpose, then he has no way to make it up, neither the obligatory prayer nor the sunnah. For example, if he did not pray the midday prayer in its time, while he was awake and not sleeping, but rather he was alert, yet the world distracted him from obeying Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and from standing up to worship Him in the prescribed time, until the next time entered, then he cannot, according to the Shari'ah, even if he is physically able, pray the pre-midday sunnah, then the obligatory prayer, then the post-midday sunnah. He has no room to pray them according to the Shari'ah, because in that prayer he would intend the pre-midday sunnah, then the post-midday sunnah, with the obligatory prayer in between. So he would be praying that during the time of the afternoon prayer. How can it be the midday sunnah, the midday obligatory prayer, and the midday sunnah? This contradicts reality from that angle. He will say: "Yes, but I am praying it as a make-up." We say: In the language of the Shari'ah, "making up" (qada') means "performing" (ada'). The meaning of making up an act of worship outside its time is a later juristic convention. Otherwise, making up means performing, and this is explicit in more than one verse. All of you remember the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) regarding the Friday prayer:
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:10]
; does this mean the prayer was made up outside its time, or does it mean it was performed in its time?
There is no doubt that the second meaning is what is intended, as stated explicitly in the verse itself:
O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:9]
,
When the prayer has been completed
after you have heard the call and attended the remembrance and the sermon, then the prayer;
And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah
[Al-Jumu'ah 62:10]
. This is a term for "making up" in which the intended meaning is complete performance. Similarly, other verses include His saying (Blessed and Exalted is He):
And when you have completed your rites, remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance.
[Al-Baqarah 2:200]
,
You have completed your rituals
. The meaning is not that you performed Hajj while the people were returning. We have a saying in Syria: "So-and-so performed Hajj while the people were returning," meaning he did not perform Hajj! Ah, so the meaning of the verse is clear: when you have finished making up the rituals of Hajj, meaning performing them in their known, prescribed times, do not neglect the remembrance of Allah, but rather
remember Allah like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance
[Al-Baqarah 2:200]
