Mention of Ibn al-Qayyim's words regarding the strong disapproval of the Salaf for those who prioritize analogical reasoning over the hadith or make analogies for it.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And Ibn al-Qayyim also said: "The noble Salaf were severe in their disapproval and anger toward anyone who opposed the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with an opinion, analogical reasoning, juristic preference, or the statement of any person, whoever he may be. They would boycott the one who did so and denounce those who made analogies for it. They did not consider anything permissible except submission to him (peace and blessings be upon him), acceptance, and receiving it with hearing and obedience. It did not even cross their minds to hesitate in accepting it until a practice or analogical reasoning supported it, or it agreed with the statement of so-and-so and so-and-so. Rather, they acted upon His saying (Glorified and Exalted is He):
It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair
[Al-Ahzab 33:36]
and similar verses mentioned earlier. We have been relegated to a time when, if one of them is told: 'It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said such and such,' he says: 'Who said this?' in order to reject the hadith. He makes his ignorance of the narrator an excuse for him to oppose it and leave off acting upon it.
If he were to advise himself, he would know that this statement is among the greatest falsehoods, and that it is not permissible for him to reject the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with such ignorance. Worse than that is his excuse for his ignorance, in that he believes that scholarly consensus has been established on opposing that Sunnah. This is a bad opinion of the Muslim community, as he attributes to them an agreement to oppose the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). And worse than that is his excuse for claiming this consensus, which is his ignorance and lack of knowledge of who said the hadith. So the matter comes back to prioritizing his ignorance over the Sunnah. May Allah be our helper." End of quote.
I say: If this is the state of one who opposes the Sunnah while believing that the scholars agreed on its opposite, what will be the state of one who opposes it while knowing that many scholars have said it, and that those who oppose it have no proof except by such principles mentioned, or by following a scholar without knowing his evidence, as will come in the third chapter.
