Continuation of the explanation of the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas, namely his saying: (And an eye that spent the night striving in the cause of Allah), and clarification of the usages of the phrase: in the cause of Allah.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : It remains to give a simple explanation of the second sentence, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him)
And an eye that guarded in the cause of Allah. وعين حرست في سبيل الله
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 21:51
We must remember that this sentence consists of a noun and its modifier
in the cause of Allah في سبيل الله
If it is used in the Noble Qur'an and in authentic hadiths, it must be interpreted as jihad in the cause of Allah, meaning fighting in the cause of Allah. I say this for several reasons, one of which is that this phrase sometimes carries a broader meaning than that. "In the cause of Allah" sometimes means more than fighting in the cause of Allah against disbelievers; it can mean that a person performs any deed for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), whatever that deed may be, even if it is traveling on earth to earn his livelihood and the livelihood of his family and children through lawful means. This is also sometimes referred to in the Shari'ah as being in the cause of Allah, but there must be a context indicating this, such as the hadith narrated by al-Tabarani and others that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting one day with his Companions around him when a young man passed by them who was strong, muscular, and full of vigor. The Companions were pleased with him when they saw him and wished that this [strength] were in the cause of Allah. What did they mean by "in the cause of Allah"? The primary meaning is jihad in the cause of Allah. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them:
If this person went out striving for his two old, elderly parents and his small children, then he is in the cause of Allah. إن كان هذا خرج يسعى على أبوين شيخين كبيرين له وعلى أطفال صغار له فهو في سبيل الله
This sentence clarified for us that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) intended here "in the cause of Allah" in the general sense, but because this context was present—the Prophet's response to the Companions, "if this were in the cause of Allah"—it became clear to us that he meant that this setting out to strive for the livelihood of his parents, his children, and himself is also in the cause of Allah. So on this occasion, here "in the cause of Allah" means in the pleasure of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), so it has a broader meaning than what is usually found in such a text and others. Among such usages is the saying of the Companions: "If this were in the cause of Allah" So when such a phrase comes to us or appears before us, what is the meaning that we should derive from it? Is it the broader meaning or the specific meaning? The specific meaning: "in the cause of Allah" means in jihad, meaning in fighting the disbelievers in the cause of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
And in reality, my aim behind this explanation is to draw attention to the interpretation of a hadith, or rather, I should say, to the interpretation by an innovator, of the verse regarding the expenditures of zakah
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor إنما الصدقات للفقراء
[At-Tawbah 9:60]
to the end of the verse, and at its end.
