What is the ruling on completing the recitation of the mushaf for the soul of a deceased person?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling in the Shari'ah regarding completing the recitation of the mushaf for the soul of a deceased person?

The Shaykh : The meaning of completing the recitation of the mushaf for the soul of a deceased person is that a person reads the Qur'an and intends its reward for the deceased. Scholars differ on this matter. Some said: This is a valid act for which the deceased is rewarded. Others said: It is not a valid act, and what is sent to the deceased from acts of nearness to Allah should be limited to what the Sunnah has brought. However, the closer view is that it is generally permissible to read the entire Qur'an or part of it and intend its reward for the deceased. But this is not an obligatory or recommended matter that is sought from a person to do. Rather, the better option, if one wants to benefit the deceased, is to make du'a' for him, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious son who prays for him. إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به، أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 949
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned du'a' and not the act, even though the hadith is in the context of an act. This indicates that it is not prescribed for a person to perform righteous deeds and intend them for any of the deceased, whether near or far. Rather, the better and prescribed option for him is to make du'a' for the deceased and to keep the righteous deeds for himself, because he himself will be in need of these righteous deeds. How can he send them to another? It is his right to make du'a' for him, as came in the hadith. As for making something of his deeds for the deceased, that is not prescribed. Therefore, I urge my brothers who want to benefit their deceased, such as mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, maternal uncles, and maternal aunts, to make du'a' for them. For that is the good, the better, and the most in accordance with what the Sunnah has brought.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
