The questioner : Your Eminence, in the hadith of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased). إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث : صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
, does the reward of supplication, sending blessings, and seeking forgiveness reach the spirit of the deceased if the person is a brother or close relative? And what is your guidance regarding those who take a fee or money in exchange for reciting the Qur'an?

The Shaykh : Yes. As for the first point, yes, supplication reaches the deceased. It is better to say that it reaches the deceased, not the spirit of the deceased. Rather, we say it reaches the deceased, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit, pious son who prays for him. إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث : صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 949
, meaning for the deceased.
As for hiring someone to recite the Qur'an for the deceased, this is an invalid fee. There is no reward for the reciter in it. And if there is no reward for the reciter, then nothing from it reaches the deceased. What some people do, which is hiring a reciter to recite for a fee when a person dies, is invalid and has no basis in the Shari'ah.
Furthermore, this recitation does not benefit the deceased because there is no reward in it. It is nothing but a waste of money, either on the estate or on the account of the others. Yes.
