A story that happened to Al-Albani with one of the scholars regarding the issue of the non-prescription of multiple congregations in a single mosque that has a regular imam.

The Shaykh : We have many proofs and witnesses in our old discussions before the spread of the Salafi call. I clearly remember once that it was reported to some of the shaykhs, who have since passed away to the mercy of Allah, that I stated the non-prescription of multiple congregations in a single mosque that has a regular imam and a regular mu'adhdhin. Our brothers know this issue, and whoever does not know it should ask the one who knows. I met him in front of the mosque. He said, "You say such and such?" I said, "Yes." He said, "How is that?" I said, "In this way." He said, "The imams..." and I brought him the book "Al-Umm" by Imam al-Shafi'i, who is truly of the Shafi'i school. When I read to him... the words of the Imam, he did not accept the words of the Imam. I asked him why? He said, "Because after Imam al-Shafi'i, imams came and studied his statements and found in them the stronger and the weaker positions, so we take what they preferred." So I wanted to draw his attention to what they accuse us of. I said, "So in the words of al-Shafi'i there is a stronger and a weaker position? Meaning there is correctness and error? So those who came after him clarified his correctness from his error?" The man was stunned by this surprise, then he twisted the subject and said, "We are Bajuri, we are not Shafi'i, we are Bajuri." So this is the reality of all the followers of taqlid: the Hanafis do not follow Abu Hanifah, and the Shafi'is do not follow al-Shafi'i, and so on with all the followers of taqlid.
So, since it is necessary to return to the one followed, the one we follow is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). This does not mean that we do not appreciate the words of the imams, but it means that we do not follow the imams for their own sake and their persons. As for the Messenger, we follow him for his own sake, so if he says a word, we do not question him in it at all. But if an imam from the imams of the Muslims, let alone a shaykh from the later shaykhs, says a statement, we are not of the school of those who say, as some of the shaykhs say, "Whoever says to his shaykh 'why' will never succeed". We say to him, "Why?" Whichever scholar says a statement, we say to him, "Why?" What is the evidence? What is the proof from the Book and the Sunnah? That is because we are commanded to follow the Book and the Sunnah.
So this is a distinguishing and important separator between us Salafis, who appreciate the imams, and their followers, who also share with us in appreciating the imams, but in our belief, they give them a distinction that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) did not give to any human being except Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
