The Doctrine of the Jahmiyyah and the Mu'tazilah Regarding the Attribute of Speech of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and the Refutation of Them

The Shaykh : These are the attributes that we must keep in mind when we say: "The speech of Allah is real speech." Herein lies the disagreement between the Mu'tazilah and the Jahmiyyah on the one hand, and the people of the Sunnah and the Salaf on the other hand. What do the Mu'tazilah say? They say that the speech of Allah is metaphorical. By this, they mean that they say: Allah does not speak. Allah says: This is the wording of the speech. Then He addresses [us] as we have seen in dozens, if not hundreds, of verses: , , [Al-Ma'idah 5:116], and so on. Therefore, the meaning of the Mu'tazilah's denial of the speech of Allah is the denial of the divine attributes... all these verses. But they do not say: "Allah did not say: ." Nor do they say that... its meaning is that they disbelieved in the Book of Allah... Likewise, they do not... say that Allah said: [Al-Baqarah 2:34]... But they say: This speech attributed to Allah is attributed... in the sense that He is its Creator; just as it is said: "The House of Allah." The meaning of "The House of Allah" is that Allah is the one who built it and ordered its construction, and it is attributed to Him... So it is with the speech of Allah; that is, in the sense that Allah created this speech in some place.
So the conversation of the Lord of the Worlds mentioned in the Qur'an with Moses, the Mu'tazilah explicitly state that this speech did not come from Allah, but from the tree!! The reality of their statement is that the tree is the one who said:[Taha 20:14] to the end of the verse; because this speech came after Allah said to Moses: [Taha 20:13], what is it? [Taha 20:14]. The Mu'tazilah said: Allah does not speak; so what do we say about these verses? The tree spoke!!... So they agreed... from the misguidance came the doctrine of the Unity of Existence. The doctrine of the Unity of Existence is one of the most disbelieving doctrines in which sects have fallen... and Communism and atheism are the same... different; because the Communists do not acknowledge the existence of a Creator and the created. This is the statement of the materialists and the heretics, which some express by saying: "It is nothing but wombs that deliver and earth that swallows"!! Whereas there is a Creator who creates and a created being in whom the Creator acts as He wills; this is not believed in by the materialists, the heretics, and the Communists today in the present age, and like them are those who say in the Unity of Existence from the extremists of the Sufis. The origin of this is from the deviation of the Mu'tazilah from believing in the Divine Speech as real speech subsisting in itself - (Blessed and Exalted is He) - so it came... why? Because they cannot deny the speech of Allah explicitly stated in the Qur'an, but they denied it by means of figurative interpretation, so they said: The tree spoke!!
Now, how is this speech attributed to Allah? They say that Allah is the one who created this speech. We now hear this serious matter that... the Mu'tazilah from the people of the Sunnah, they said: Since it is the tree that spoke and said:[Taha 20:14], and since it is permissible for you to attribute this speech to Allah and say: "Allah said: [Taha 20:14]" because He created this speech in the tree; then every disbelief, every speech that occurs on the face of the earth is the speech of Allah, and among that is the statement of Pharaoh: [An-Nazi'at 79:24]. The one who created the speech in the tree created the speech in Pharaoh; so there is no difference between this speech and that speech in that it is all a creation from the creation of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
And from here came... the aforementioned, so every speech, however deep-rooted in misguidance, that occurs in this universe is the creation of Allah, so it is He who says, meaning, imagine insults and vices coming from the open sinners, the wicked, and the disbelievers; so this is all His speech!! And this is what Ibn Arabi explicitly stated, who represents the doctrine of the Unity of Existence explicitly, when he said:
"And every speech in existence is His speech *** It is the same to us whether it is prose or verse"
He explicitly stated what the Mu'tazilah were compelled to accept in the past, so the gate of this great misguidance which Ibn Arabi expressed in his previous statement:
"And every speech in existence is His speech *** It is the same to us whether it is prose or verse"
This greatest misguidance came from the figurative interpretation of the Mu'tazilah of His saying - the Exalted - :[Taha 20:13], , No, rather Allah spoke to Moses through the tree, so the tree is the one who spoke. From here, the scholars of the Salaf from the four Imams carried... very serious [consequences] for those who deny the Divine Speech, for what they know of the outcomes of this denial, which the Mu'tazilah were compelled to accept in some of its forms and were forced to say other forms, and from that resulted the denial of the existence of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) absolutely.
Thus was the disagreement... between the people of the Sunnah and the Salaf on the one hand and the Mu'tazilah on the other hand. So these people explicitly stated their misguidance that Allah does not speak. So when we confront them with the verses... they say: This is metaphorical. Allah is the one who... the speech; so He is the one who created the speech in the tree, and so on.
And Allah spoke to Musa directly
Allah said
And [remember] when We said
And [beware the Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, did you say
And Allah spoke to Musa directly
And [mention] when We said to the angels
So the conversation of the Lord of the Worlds mentioned in the Qur'an with Moses, the Mu'tazilah explicitly state that this speech did not come from Allah, but from the tree!! The reality of their statement is that the tree is the one who said:
Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me
إِنَّنِي أَنَا اللَّه لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدْنِيso listen to what is revealed
Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
Now, how is this speech attributed to Allah? They say that Allah is the one who created this speech. We now hear this serious matter that... the Mu'tazilah from the people of the Sunnah, they said: Since it is the tree that spoke and said:

إِنَّنِي أَنَا اللَّهُI am your most exalted lord."
And from here came... the aforementioned, so every speech, however deep-rooted in misguidance, that occurs in this universe is the creation of Allah, so it is He who says, meaning, imagine insults and vices coming from the open sinners, the wicked, and the disbelievers; so this is all His speech!! "And every speech in existence is His speech *** It is the same to us whether it is prose or verse"
This greatest misguidance came from the figurative interpretation of the Mu'tazilah of His saying - the Exalted - :
And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you].
And Allah spoke to Musa directly
Thus was the disagreement... between the people of the Sunnah and the Salaf on the one hand and the Mu'tazilah on the other hand.
