The Methodology of the Salaf Regarding the Speech of Allah the Exalted, and the Refutation of Those Who Oppose This from the Mu'tazilah and the Asha'irah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : And this is a very important point: the Asha'irah and the Mu'tazilah denied the divine speech. But the Mu'tazilah were more explicit than the Asha'irah. The Mu'tazilah explicitly stated that Allah does not speak. The Asha'irah say, "How can He not speak? Allah said:
And Allah spoke to Moses directly وكلم الله موسى تكليما
"

The questioner : with speech

The Shaykh : But when they explain the speech, they end up in the position of the Mu'tazilah. Okay... because what do the Mu'tazilah say? If they attribute to Him that He speaks... the created things.
... The human being speaks, and this [thing] speaks; do you see it has two lips and teeth... it does not work unless there are molars, and it must be... these details. The Asha'irah agreed with the Mu'tazilah that Allah does not speak with speech that is heard, because the speech of a human being is heard, and Allah is not like a human being. Therefore, they invented something that does not exist in the Sunnah... in the Qur'an. They said, "The psychological speech is speech. Allah speaks, but His speech is psychological, meaning the psychological speech is the divine knowledge. The divine knowledge is not heard, not seen, and not... because it is an attribute subsisting in Him (Blessed and Exalted is He). The psychological speech is not uttered, not read, and not heard. Therefore, you will find some contemporary Asha'irah arguing in some of their marginal notes with the Mu'tazilah who deny the divine speech, and the Asha'irah in their claim. How do you deny the divine speech?"
Is Allah not able, when He spoke to [Moses] with speech, to make Moses understand His psychological speech? And Allah says to Moses:
so listen to what is revealed [to you]. (14) Indeed, I am Allah. There is no deity except Me فاستمع لما يوحى * إنني أنا الله لا إله إلا أنا
[Taha 20:13-14]
so listen to what is revealed فاستمع لما يوحى
[Taha 20:13]
Despite this verse, the Ash'ari says to the Mu'tazili, "Allah is not able to make him understand the psychological speech that is not heard?" And Allah said in the Qur'an:
So listen فاستمع
And this is a surah... listen... how can He not hear?

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : These interpretations are why the scholars of the Salaf called the Asha'irah those who deny the attributes, because denial is rejection and negation. So here they denied the divine speech. Therefore, in their simplified and lengthy explanations, they explicitly state that this Qur'an, which Muslims agree is the speech of Allah, is not the speech of Allah as speech that is read. And as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: من قرأ القرآن فله بكل حرف عشر حسنات لا أقول ألم حرف بل ألف حرف لام حرف ميم حرف Whoever reads the Qur'an, for every letter he has ten good deeds. I do not say Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, Mim is a letter There is an Alif with Allah, a Lam, a Mim. There is absolutely nothing of this; this is psychological speech. And therefore they say that the speech is all one thing, so He has been saying since eternity:
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?" وما تلك بيمينك يا موسى
[Taha 20:17]
He has been saying since eternity, not on the occasion of addressing his Lord.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Of course, unfortunately, Moses was found later, so since eternity our Lord says:
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?" وما تلك بيمينك يا موسى
[Taha 20:17]
Since eternity He says to him:
Throw your staff ألق عصاك
Very ridiculous things in terms of logic and very dangerous in terms of creed, because it means denying the entire Qur'an. All of this is from the blessings of figurative interpretation, and there is absolutely nothing for it. Say, people, our Lord speaks, but His speech is not like the speech of... And among the wonders of the power of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is that He created for them the radio. What does it speak without teeth, without lips, without a larynx, without anything? The Creator who created this device cannot be unlike humans. Allah is the Greatest.
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. ليس كمثله شيء وهو السميع البصير
[Ash-Shuraa 42:11]

The questioner : ... The Mu'tazilah and the Asha'irah... currently they cling to them and are pleased with them
Another questioner: ...

The Shaykh : ... This is it... The Mu'tazilah persisted in their misguidance... .
