The Shaykh : In the third or fourth hadith, which is also authentic, he said: And from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari, from his father, that a man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, how should I speak when I ask my Lord? He said:
O Allah, grant me pardon, have mercy upon me, protect me, provide me sustenance قل اللهم اغفر لي وارحمني وعافني وارزقني
Sahih Muslim 2697c
and he gathered his fingers together except the thumb
which sums up for you (the good) of this world and that of the Hereafter. فإن هؤلاء تجمع لك دنياك وآخرتك
Sahih Muslim 2697c
O Allah, grant me pardon, have mercy upon me, protect me, provide me sustenance," and he collected his fingers together except his thumb and said: It is in these words (that there is supplication) which sums up for you (the good) of this world and that of the Hereafter. اللّهم اغفر لي وارحمني وعافني وارزقني تجمع لك دنياك وآخرتك
Sahih Muslim 2697c
These four words, because your saying
Forgive me اغفر لي
cleanses you of your sins and offenses
And have mercy on me وارحمني
that Allah the Exalted and Majestic may encompass you with His mercy in this world and in the Hereafter
And grant me well-being وعافني
in my body, in my health
And provide for me وارزقني
what suffices me from asking anyone other than You, O my Lord. That is why he (peace be upon him) said:
which sums up for you (the good) of this world and that of the Hereafter. فإن هؤلاء تجمع لك دنياك وآخرتك
Sahih Muslim 2697c
Muslim narrated it.
