The questioner : What is the ruling on the followers or the praying people saying "There is no god but Allah" after the iqamah of the prayer, meaning after the mu'adhdhin who calls for the iqamah says "There is no god but Allah"?

The Shaykh : Some scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) hold that the iqamah is responded to by the followers just as the adhan is, meaning that if the mu'adhdhin says "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar," you say "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar"; if he says "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," you say "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah"; if he says "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," you say "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah"; if he says "Hasten to prayer," you say "Hasten to prayer"; if he says "Hasten to success," you say "Hasten to success"; if he says "The prayer has begun, the prayer has begun," you say "May Allah establish it and make it lasting"; if he says "Allahu Akbar," you say "Allahu Akbar"; and if he says "There is no god but Allah," you say "There is no god but Allah." Based on this view, it is prescribed for the follower to say "There is no god but Allah" after the mu'adhdhin says "There is no god but Allah." Others hold that the iqamah is not responded to, because the hadith regarding this is questionable in its authenticity, as one of its narrators has been criticized. Accordingly, a person should not say "There is no god but Allah" after the mu'adhdhin says "There is no god but Allah."
