The Shaykh : And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who attends the funeral till the prayer is offered for (the dead), for him is the reward of one qirat, and he who attends (and stays) till he is buried, for him is the reward of two qirats
Sahih Muslim 945a
It was asked: "What are the two qirats?" He said:
Like two great mountains
And in a hadith that will come:
Like Uhud
The qirat is like Uhud, Mount Uhud. He said: In this hadith, narrated by al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah, in a narration by Muslim and others:
The smaller of them أصغرهما
The smaller of the two great mountains. He said:
The smaller of them is like Mount Uhud.
And in a narration by al-Bukhari:
(A believer) who accompanies the funeral procession of a Muslim out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's reward and remains with it till the funeral prayer is offered and the burial ceremonies are over, he will return with a reward of two Qirats. Each Qirat is like the size of the (Mount) Uhud. He who offers the funeral prayer only and returns before the burial, will return with the reward of one Qirat only.
Sahih al-Bukhari 47
In this hadith is the detail we mentioned earlier, that accompanying the funeral is divided into two halves: the first half has the reward of one qirat, and the second half has the reward of another qirat. So whoever accompanies a funeral from the time it leaves until it is prayed over and until it is buried, he returns with two qirats of reward, each qirat being like Mount Uhud, or the other narration:
The smaller of the two qirats is like Mount Uhud
And the qirat in language varies from country to country. In most countries, the qirat is one-twentieth, and here in the Levant, I do not know if the matter is still so, but this is what I think: it is one twenty-fourth. So the qirat is one-twentieth or one twenty-fourth. This is for the one who accompanies the funeral from its house to its grave; he has the reward of two qirats, each qirat being like Mount Uhud. But does this accompanying, or this reward, apply to every companion, especially if he accompanies it from his house to the mosque and then does not enter the mosque, or from his house to the prayer place where the funeral is prayed over? There is no doubt that the one who obtains the reward of two qirats, or at least one qirat, must meet the condition you heard in some narrations of the hadith: with faith and seeking reward. So this excludes everyone who accompanies the funeral for any other reason other than seeking reward and drawing near to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He). And this is what is observed today: accompanying the funeral has become a matter of lifting responsibility, or as I believe and always call it, it is social hypocrisy. Very, very few people accompany the funeral to obtain this great reward and merit mentioned in this hadith. And in some of the nearby hadiths, it will come that one of the noble Companions did not have knowledge of this hadith, whose primary merit in preserving it for this Ummah belongs to the one who heard it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), namely Abu Hurayrah, this noble man. The primary merit in preserving this hadith belongs to him, because it was hidden from some of the worshipping, ascetic Companions. You will hear that a discussion took place among some of them regarding this hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah, and the matter required that they ask Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she confirmed his hadith. Then that Companion, who was Ibn 'Umar, said: "And what do you know? Ibn 'Umar has lost many qirats."
