I hope you will explain the word qunut in detail so that we may, if Allah wills, be among those who stand in qunut?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I hope you will explain the word qunut in detail so that we may, if Allah wills, be among those who stand in qunut?

The Shaykh : By qunut, he likely means the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle prayer and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient. حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:238]
It is used with multiple meanings, one of which is silence. This is why the narrator of the hadith said:
So we were ordered to be silent and prohibited from talking. فأمرنا بالسكوت، ونهينا عن الكلام
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 405Sahih (Darussalam)
It is known that the intended meaning of
We were commanded to be silent. أمرنا بالسكوت
is silence from the speech of people, not silence from everything, because the prayer consists entirely of words and actions that are necessary. Thus, qunut is used to mean leaving off what contradicts the prayer, it is used to mean prolonging the standing and the recitation, it is used to mean perfect humility before Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and it is used to mean supplication, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made qunut for the oppressed and made qunut supplicating against other groups.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
