The questioner : The questioner says: She inquires about the noble verse: [As-Saf 61:10-11] Does this verse include the struggle against the self that commands evil, and the struggle against desire and Satan? I ask for clarification?
The Shaykh : In this noble verse, Allah the Exalted says:[As-Saf 61:10] And know that when Allah the Exalted begins His speech with: [Al-Baqarah 2:104] it is incumbent upon you to listen to this call directed by Allah Mighty and Majestic to you, because when He calls you, it is either a good thing you are commanded to do, or an evil thing you are forbidden from, or a piece of news from which you benefit. For this reason, it is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: “When Allah the Exalted says: [Al-Baqarah 2:104] then lend it your ear, for it is either a good thing you are commanded to do, or an evil thing you are forbidden from” And His saying: [As-Saf 61:10] is a question intended to arouse interest, meaning that Allah the Exalted arouses our desire for this trade, which is the profitable trade, the trade of the Hereafter. [As-Saf 61:11] And what is meant by striving in the cause of Allah here is: the struggle against the enemies, that is, exerting effort in fighting them until they submit or pay the jizyah from their own hands while they are humbled. As for the struggle against the self, it is included in His saying: [As-Saf 61:11] because the perfection of faith and the realization of faith is that a person struggles against his self to refrain from committing sins and to perform the obligatory duties.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
(10) O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment? (11) [It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know.
