The story of 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him), which indicates his asceticism and intensity of worship, and the prohibition of extremism in religion.

The Shaykh : Perhaps many of you remember the story of 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As when his father married him off =
-- Fill in the gaps, our brothers, fill in, move forward like this, move forward a bit like this, move forward like this, stand close together, our brothers, do not be selfish, leave space for the others --
= 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As was a young man when his father 'Amr married him to a woman from Quraysh. One day, he asked his daughter-in-law, his son's wife, about her situation with her husband. She said to him in a gentle phrase: "He has not yet touched our bed"; meaning that he got married but did not consummate the marriage, because he had not yet touched our bed. Why? Because he fasted the whole year and stood in prayer at night. So when would he have time for his wife?! There is no doubt that such news would upset the father, whether from a religious perspective or a personal perspective; because he married him off to protect his chastity and to give him relief. And from a legal perspective, it is not permissible for a Muslim to be more concerned with worship than what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has prescribed, because that is extremism in religion. And the Lord of the worlds said in His noble Book:
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth.
[An-Nisa 4:171]
, do not be extreme. And the Messenger (peace be upon him) described something of extremism in a situation where the Muslims understood the opposite of what the Messenger (peace be upon him) intended. That is, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Farewell Pilgrimage, and as he was approaching his departure from Muzdalifah to Mina, he said to Ibn 'Abbas:
Pick up for me seven pebbles like the pebbles of slingshots
, and he gestured. The scholars say that this was the size of a large chickpea. And he (peace be upon him) said to Ibn 'Abbas on this occasion:
And beware of extremism in religion; for indeed, what destroyed those before you was their extremism in their religion
.
So what do people do today when they throw the pebbles? We see amazing things!! The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) directed the Muslim to pick up small pebbles; because the intention is not a physical battle, but rather a spiritual, moral battle; therefore he advised against making the pebble large, lest it hit the heads of many of those gathered around the pillar, and this happens often; if the pebble is large, it may harm the one it hits. Today we see sandals piled up around the pillar, some on top of others; because the ignorant among the Muslims did not conduct themselves with the etiquette of the religion; they imagine that there is a devil actually standing there waiting for them to stone him, and the truth is not so, but rather there is a place where the devil appeared to our father Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him), so he stoned him at the first pillar, then the second, then the third.
The point is: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned the Muslims against extremism in religion, even in making the pebble large; the pebble with which one throws at the pillar; so in worship, standing in prayer at night and fasting the whole year, this is even more of a reason for the Messenger (peace be upon him) to prohibit it. So when 'Amr heard from his daughter-in-law what he heard, he complained to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr said: "Either the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) met me or he sent for me." He said:
It has reached me that you stand in prayer at night, fast during the day, and do not approach women
. He said: "That is the case, O Messenger of Allah." He said:
For your soul, you have a right over you, and for your body, you have a right over you, and for your wife, you have a right over you, and for your visitor—that is, the one who visits you—and for your guest, you have a right over you.
, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to set for him a methodology to adhere to in his entire life, not to exceed that. He was fasting the whole year, so he said to him:
Fast three days of every month, and one good deed is rewarded with ten times its like; so it is as if you fasted
Really?
the whole month الشهر كله
, three days. So what was the answer? Here is the point; he said: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a young man, I have strength, I am able to do more than that." He is saying the exact opposite of what people say today. He is saying: "My youth, my time of youth, that I waste my time in less than this worship that I am performing." But the Messenger (peace be upon him) sees what we do not see, as the Lady 'Aishah said to him when he (peace be upon him) said to her:
O Aisha! This is Gabriel sending his greetings to you.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6201
. She said: "And peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, you see what we do not see. You are telling me:
This is Gabriel sending his greetings to you
Sahih al-Bukhari 6201
, and peace be upon you, and I believe what you say; because you see what we do not see."
So if the Messenger (peace be upon him) sees with the eye what we do not see, he is even more likely to see with insight what we do not see with insight; and therefore the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was seeing the consequence of 'Abd Allah ibn 'Amr's exaggeration in his worship, and that actually happened. So when Ibn 'Amr said: "I am a young man, I have strength, I am able to do more than that"; he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Fast like this"; he also set for him another system. He said: "I am a young man, I am able to do more than that"; he repeated the same previous words. And finally: he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Fast one day and break the fast the next; for it is the best of fasting, and it is the fast of Dawud (peace be upon him), and he did not flee when he met the enemy
. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I want something better than that." He said:
There is noting better than that.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2392Sahih (Darussalam)
.
This is regarding fasting; fasting the whole year was not acceptable to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) for him, but rather he gave him fasting that actually equals half the year, and a reward for the whole year, and this is the true gain. And regarding keeping the whole night awake, which he was doing, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Recite the whole of the Qur'An during every month
Sahih Muslim 1159d
, so he returned to his previous word, saying: "O Messenger of Allah, I am a young man, I have strength, I am able to do more than that." Until he (peace and blessings be upon him) finally said to him:
Read the Qur'an in three days
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 59:93
; in three nights,
No one properly understands who reads the Qur’an in less than three days.
Sunan Ibn Majah 1347Sahih (Darussalam)
, and on this Ibn 'Amr parted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was emotionally and religiously not satisfied, but he knew the saying of our Lord in the noble Qur'an:
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.
[An-Nisa 4:65]
, so he submitted. Then the days passed and passed until he grew old and aged, so he used to say: "I wish I had accepted the dispensation of the Messenger of Allah; he said to me:
Recite the whole of the Qur'An during every month
Sahih Muslim 1159d
, I wish I had accepted it from him the first time. He said to me regarding fasting, fast three days of every month, and I have the reward of fasting the whole month; I wish I had accepted that from him."
This is how the righteous Salaf were, whom we always call for following and taking as an example; because they truly responded to Allah and the Messenger. As for us, the best of us is not equal to the least of them. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth when he said:
Do not revile my Companions; by him in whose hand my soul is, if one of you contributed the amount of gold equivalent to Uhud, it would not amount to as much as the mudd of one of them, or half of it.
Sunan Abi Dawud 4658Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and that is only because of their sincerity to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and their obedience and their complete submission.
And this is sufficient, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
