What is the companion (qarin) and does it accompany the deceased even in his grave?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the companion (qarin)? And does it accompany the deceased even in his grave?

The Shaykh : The companion (qarin) is a Shaytan assigned to a person by the permission of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). It commands him to do indecency and forbids him from what is right, as Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality الشَّيْطَانُ يَعِدُكُمُ الْفَقْرَ وَيَأْمُرُكُمْ بِالْفَحْشَاءِ
[Al-Baqarah 2:268]
But if Allah bestows upon a servant a sound, sincere heart that is directed toward Allah (Mighty and Majestic), desiring the Hereafter and preferring it over this world, then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) helps him against this companion until the companion is unable to mislead him. Therefore, a person should seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan whenever he feels a prompt from Shaytan, as Allah commanded. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
And if an evil suggestion comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is Hearing and Knowing. وَإِمَّا يَنزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
[Al-A'raf 7:200]
The meaning of a prompt from Shaytan is that it commands you to abandon obedience or commands you to commit a sin. If you feel an inclination in yourself to abandon obedience, that is from Shaytan; or an inclination to commit a sin, that is from Shaytan. So hasten to seek refuge in Allah from him, and Allah (Mighty and Majestic) will protect you. As for whether this companion extends to being with the person in his grave, the answer is no. It appears, and Allah knows best, that when a person dies, the companion departs from him, because the mission for which it was assigned has ended. This is because when a person dies, his deeds are cut off, as came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except for three things:
recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به، أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Sahih Muslim 1631
.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
