What is the difference between al-Bukhari’s saying, “There is a consideration in it,” and “There is a consideration in its chain of narration”?

The questioner : So, what is the difference between al-Bukhari’s saying, “There is a consideration in it,” and “There is a consideration in its chain of narration”?

The Shaykh : I do not find an apparent difference between them. That is, they are two words that express one thing.

The questioner : One thing.

The Shaykh : Yes, this is what we have touched upon. There may be something else that we have not known, and Allah knows best.

The questioner : I came across a Companion about whom there is disagreement. Imam al-Bukhari mentioned the chain of narration and said, “So-and-so has a consideration in his chain of narration.” Does this mean that his Companionship is not authentic, i.e., that the chain of narration established by the Companionship is not authentic, or is it that this man himself has a consideration?

The Shaykh : This depends on the referent of the pronoun. When you say “so-and-so,” do you mean a Companion?

The questioner : No, a Companion or not a Companion, a narrator from the narrators of hadith.

The Shaykh : But if he said that in the biography of a Companion.

The questioner : About whom there is disagreement; some classify him as a Successor and some classify him as a Companion.

The Shaykh : But he says, “There is a consideration in his chain of narration.” It is not reasonable that he intends the chain of narration of this Companion, but rather there is an elision in the speech. That is, there is a consideration in the chain of narration of this narrator who narrated this hadith from this Companion. He cannot mean the Companion himself, but rather one of the narrators who transmitted the hadith to him. In this case, the previous answer applies: there is a consideration in the narrator, or there is a consideration in the narrator’s chain of narration, and he is below the Companion. It does not appear to me that there is a notable difference.

The questioner : Between the two expressions.
