Does breaking the ablution, such as passing gas, during tawaf invalidate the tawaf and require us to enter the state of ihram again? And if I did not perform ablution, is there a sin on me, and what should I do?

The questioner : Does breaking the ablution, such as passing gas, during tawaf invalidate the tawaf and require me to enter the state of ihram again? And if I did not perform ablution, is there a sin on me, and what should I do?

The Shaykh : If the person performing tawaf breaks his ablution during the tawaf, then his tawaf is invalid according to the majority of scholars, just as if one breaks his state of ritual purity during prayer, his prayer is invalid by consensus. Accordingly, he must leave the tawaf, perform ablution, and then repeat the tawaf from the beginning, because what preceded the breaking of purity is invalidated by it. He is not required to repeat the ihram, but only to repeat the tawaf. The Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) held the view that if the person performing tawaf breaks his purity during the tawaf, or performs tawaf without ablution, his tawaf is valid. Accordingly, if he breaks his purity during the tawaf, he continues the tawaf and is not required to go and perform ablution. He cited evidence for this, and one who examines it will find the strength of his position (may Allah have mercy on him). However, if we adopt this view chosen by the Shaykh al-Islam due to the strength and preponderance of its evidence, then when he finishes his tawaf, he does not pray the two rak'ahs of tawaf, because the two rak'ahs of tawaf are a prayer that requires ritual purity by the consensus of scholars.
