What is the authenticity of the hadith that says, “Ask for your brother to be given steadfastness, for he is now being asked”? And can this supplication be collective, for example, one person makes the supplication and the others say “Ameen,” or must it be done individually?

The questioner : What is the authenticity of the hadith that says:
and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. اسألوا لأخيكم التثبيت، فإنه الأن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
? And can this supplication be collective, for example, one person makes the supplication and the others say “Ameen,” or must it be done individually? Disputes have now arisen over this supplication, which leads to people abandoning it, as some of the general public do not understand this supplication and do not pay it any attention. May Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets and the Imam of the Pious, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment. This hadith is authentic. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when he finished burying the deceased, would stand over him and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم، واسألوا له التثبيت، فإنه الأن يسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
“O Allah, give us steadfastness, O Lord of the worlds.” He said:
Ask for your brother’s forgiveness. استغفروا لأخيكم
meaning, ask Allah for his forgiveness. Say: “O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him, O Allah, forgive him.”
And ask for him to be given steadfastness. واسألوا له التثبيت
Say: “O Allah, give him steadfastness, O Allah, give him steadfastness, O Allah, give him steadfastness.” And if you wish, say: “O Allah, give him steadfastness with the firm word in this worldly life and in the Hereafter.”
And his saying:
For he is now being asked. فإنه الأن يسأل
Now. الأن
means after the completion of his burial.
He is asked. يُسأل
means that two angels ask him about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet. As for the believer who is certain, may Allah make us and you among them.

The questioner : Amen.

The Shaykh : He says: “My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad.” Then a caller from the heavens calls out: “Your servant has spoken the truth, so spread for him from Paradise and dress him in Paradise, and open for him a door to Paradise.” A door to Paradise is opened for him, and he receives from its spirit and its bliss. His grave is made spacious for him to the extent of his sight, and he sees that he has moved from the worldly life to what is better than it. As for the one who is in doubt—may Allah protect us and you from that—he says: “I don’t know, I don’t know.” Then he is struck with an iron mallet, and he lets out a scream that everything hears except humans. If humans were to hear it, they would be stunned. At that time, it is incumbent upon us to ask Allah for this deceased person’s forgiveness and steadfastness. However, the supplication is not collective; rather, each person supplicates on his own. That is why the hadith, as you heard, states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand and say:
Seek forgiveness for your brother, and beg steadfastness for him, for he will be questioned now. استغفروا لأخيكم، واسألوا له التثبيت، فإنه الأن يُسأل
Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani)
and he did not supplicate on their behalf, peace and blessings be upon him. Yes.
