What is the criterion for hardship that permits combining the two prayers while resident?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the criterion regarding the issue of hardship?

The Shaykh : Did Allah not specify hardship?

The questioner : No...

The Shaykh : You say: No, what do you mean by no? When I tell you that Allah specified hardship, you say no to me. What do you mean by no? I am only asking why you do not answer me, orThe Shaykh : It is not permissible to ask, but one is asked.

The questioner : What is hardship?

The Shaykh : The hardship that a person finds within himself; I am unable to bring you anything more than what came in the Qur'an:
and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty ومَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
What is it? You are a group of Arabs and we are non-Arabs; we learn from you. What is hardship?
and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty ومَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
It is the thing in which, if a person falls, he finds hardship; he finds... he finds heaviness. What can I tell you more than this?

The questioner : ...regarding... the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) combined in Madinah to the extent that Ibn Abbas... why? He said: ...hardship... Did he mention that the Messenger, after praying this, did not explain in his heart why he combined while in Madinah?

The Shaykh : If he had explained it by saying so, the one who conveyed his action to us, who is Abdullah ibn Abbas, would have conveyed it to us. But he did not say that the Messenger stood after the prayer and said: I did this for such and such. However, in many cases, as the scholars say, the language of the situation is more eloquent than the language of speech. Who knows this language of the situation? Only the one who witnesses it. Therefore, it is said in the examples: "The witness sees what the absent one does not see." Indeed, this came as a sound hadith from the Messenger, and it is one of the Prophetic examples. So Ibn Abbas witnessed this combining and was asked what the Messenger intended by it? He said: "He intended not to burden his Ummah." So he did not convey a statement from the Messenger, but rather conveyed his action and mentioned what he understood to be the Messenger's goal in this action, which is removing hardship from his Ummah.
