The questioner : When rising from prostration for recitation, some people rise from the prostration and take the mushaf before straightening up from the prostration. Is straightening up from prostration for recitation obligatory? And is it like the sitting between the two prostrations, where one places his hands on his thighs? What is your esteemed opinion on this? May Allah reward you with good?
The Shaykh : Prostration for recitation is a standalone prostration; there is no standing or sitting before it, and no standing or sitting after it. If a person comes upon a verse of prostration while sitting, he prostrates. Some scholars recommended that he stand up and then prostrate, but there is no clear sunnah (recommended practice) in this matter. Therefore, he prostrates from a sitting position, says takbir (saying Allahu akbar) when he prostrates, and does not say takbir when he rises. He does not say taslim (the closing salam of prayer) unless the prostration for recitation is within the prayer. In that case, he says takbir when he prostrates and says takbir when he rises, because those who described the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said that he said takbir every time he lowered himself and every time he raised himself, and they did not exclude prostration for recitation from this, even though he used to prostrate for recitation when he read a prostration verse in the prayer. Based on this, we say that when a person finishes the prostration and raises his forehead from the ground, the prostration is finished, and he is permitted to take the mushaf before he fully settles into a sitting position.
