The questioner : This questioner says: My wife has jewelry made of gold which she uses for herself, and I have heard that some scholars have issued a ruling that zakah is not obligatory on it, while others have issued a ruling that zakah is obligatory. We ask for advice and guidance regarding the zakah on this jewelry?

The Shaykh : If the jewelry is less than the nisab, meaning if all the gold the woman has is below the nisab, then there is no zakah on it. The nisab is eighty-five grams. If the woman has gold reaching eighty-five grams, then it is obligatory for her to pay its zakah. This is the stronger position among the opinions of the scholars.
Its evidence is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his family
If any owner of gold or silver does not pay what is due on him, when the Day of Resurrection would come, plates of fire would be beaten out for him; these would then be heated in the fire of Hell and his sides, his forehead and his back would be cauterized with them. Whenever these cool down, (the process is) repeated during a day the extent of which would be fifty thousand years, until judgment is pronounced among servants, and he sees whether his path is to take him to Paradise or to Hell.
Sahih Muslim 987a
So his saying (peace and blessings be upon him)
If any owner of gold or silver ما من صاحب ذهب ولا فضة
Sahih Muslim 987a
is general. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh.
