The Ruling on Zakah in Gold and Silver Jewelry

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: A woman asks: Is there zakah in jewelry?

A: Scholars have differed regarding gold and silver jewelry. Some say that zakah is obligatory in it, while others say there is no zakah in it. These are two well-known positions among the scholars, and the more correct of them is that there is zakah in jewelry if it reaches the nisab. If the gold reaches twenty mithqals, which amounts to eleven and a half Saudi pounds in Saudi gold currency, or ninety-two grams, and if it is less than that, then there is nothing due in it. The rate is one-quarter of one-tenth, so for every one thousand, twenty-five is due, and for every one hundred, two and a half.
Likewise, if silver jewelry reaches one hundred and forty mithqals, zakah becomes obligatory in it. This amount is fifty-six Saudi riyals in Saudi silver currency.
This is the nisab, and anything less than that has nothing due in it. The evidence for the obligation of zakah in gold and silver jewelry is what is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
If any owner of gold or silver does not pay what is due on him, when the Day of Resurrection would come, plates of fire would be beaten out for him; these would then be heated in the fire of Hell and his sides, his forehead and his back would be cauterized with them.ما من صاحب ذهب ولا فضة لا يؤدي حقها، إلا إذا كان يوم القيامة صفحت له صفائح من نار، فيكوى بها جبينه وجنبه وظهره...
Sahih Muslim 987a
This includes jewelry and non-jewelry.
It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that a woman came to him with two gold bracelets on her daughter's hand, meaning two gold bangles, and he said:
Do you give the zakah of this?أتعطين زكاة هذا؟
She said: No. He said:
Are you pleased that Allah may put two bangles of fire on your hands?أيسرك أن يسورك الله بهما يوم القيامة سوارين من نار
Sunan Abi Dawud 1563Hasan (Al-Albani)
So she threw them down and said: They are for Allah and His Messenger. Abu Dawud and al-Nasa'i narrated it with a sound chain.
It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked him about jewelry she used to wear made of gold: Is this a treasure? He said:
Whatever reaches the amount where zakah is due and is paid, is not a treasure.ما بلغ أن يزكى فزكي فليس بكنز
This indicates that jewelry is considered a treasure if it is not paid zakah on.
It is obligatory for a woman to pay zakah on the gold and silver jewelry she has if it reaches the nisab—as mentioned earlier—and a lunar year has passed over it. As for anything other than gold and silver, such as diamonds, pearls, and others, there is no zakah in them if they are for wearing. And success is from Allah.
