Explanation of his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): “... O My servants, you are all naked except for the one I have clothed, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you. O My servants, you err by night and by day...”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then He, the Exalted, said:
O My servants, all of you are naked
Sahih Muslim 2577a
, because when a human being is born, he is born, as it is said, as Allah created him, with no clothing on him
O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you.
Sahih Muslim 2577a
. Do you understand this phrase, just like the one before it and the one before that? It means that a person turns to Allah and that he is in need of Him in everything, even in clothing. In fact, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Let one of you ask his Lord even for the strap of his sandal
. The *shasa'* is the strap of the sandal. If it breaks, even though it is a trivial thing, he goes to the cobbler, who puts in... three nails, three... Even for this, he asks his Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He. Our Lord is not going to descend from the height of His Throne to untie his sandal for him, but when he asks Him for the strap of his sandal, it means that he is asking Him to make it easy for someone to patch it for him.
So, turning to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to facilitate the means of sustenance and the means of clothing is a matter of great importance that a person must not neglect. Because in reality, these turnings to Allah for these requests, even though they are easy for Allah, are part of the perfection of a servant’s servitude to Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Because when you ask your Lord even for the strap of your sandal, you are proving your need for Him even in the most trivial matters. Therefore, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Supplication is worship
. Then he recited the saying of the Blessed and Exalted:
And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.
[Ghafir: 60],
O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you. O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you.
Sahih Muslim 2577a
. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, describes Himself in many verses as the All-Forgiving, the Merciful:
Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. (11) He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers
[Nuh: 10-11], and so on. Also, in this hadith, He describes Himself as the All-Forgiving, and He describes the servant as one who errs by night and by day. So what is the path to salvation? What is the salvation of this person from the consequences of the many sins he commits and perpetrates by night and by day? What is the salvation from that?
So seek My forgiveness, and I will forgive you.
. Ask Me for forgiveness for your sins.
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
[Ta-Ha: 82]. Therefore, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
if you were not to commit sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence and He would replace (you by) those people who would commit sin and seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would have pardoned them.
Sahih Muslim 2749
. So this hadith is connected by a strong link to this passage of this hadith:
you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you
Sahih Muslim 2577a
. It is as if the Blessed and Exalted is saying in this Holy Hadith that it is the nature of humans to err, and not only to err, but to exaggerate in sin, so he errs by night and by day. Therefore, He emphasized this meaning in the other hadith, which is his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
if you were not to commit sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence
Sahih Muslim 2749
. That means He has decreed non-existence for you and created another creation whose nature is to err, if we were not to err.
... on sin, as long as he is...
if you were not to commit sin, Allah would sweep you out of existence and He would replace (you by) those people who would commit sin and seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would have pardoned them.
Sahih Muslim 2749
. No, this is not the intended meaning of the hadith. Rather, the intended meaning of the hadith is that since it is the nature of humans to err, one should not despair of the mercy of Allah, but rather turn to Allah after he errs and ask the Blessed and Exalted to forgive him, so Allah will forgive him because He is the All-Forgiving. For whom? For the one who asks Him for forgiveness. As for the criminal who sins and persists in his sin and his transgression, and then does not turn to his Lord to ask Him for forgiveness, Allah will not forgive him.
So, if the matter is as this last hadith indicates, and as came in another hadith in whose chain there is some weakness, which is:
Every son of Adam commits sin, and the best of those who commit sin are those who repent.
Sunan Ibn Majah 4251Hasan (Darussalam)
, then since it is the nature of the human being to err, let him follow his error with repentance to Allah and asking his Lord, Blessed and Exalted, to forgive his sins, no matter how many they are.
We will suffice with this amount for tonight. Let us open the door for questions and answers.
