I performed the obligatory Hajj for myself last year as a tamattu' pilgrim. If I wish to perform Hajj for my deceased father as an ifrad pilgrim rather than tamattu', is that permissible?

The questioner : This questioner is Muhammad 'Abd al-'Aziz Shukri, an Egyptian resident of Riyadh. He says: Last year, 1417, Allah the Exalted granted me the ability to perform Hajj at His Sacred House, and I fulfilled the obligation as a tamattu' pilgrim for myself. If I wish to perform Hajj for my deceased father as an ifrad pilgrim rather than tamattu', is that permissible? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : There is no blame on a person who has performed the obligatory rites of Hajj and 'Umrah if he performs Hajj on behalf of another or performs 'Umrah on behalf of another.
The evidence for this is the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man saying, "Labbaik on behalf of Shubrumah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Who is Shubrumah? من شبرمة؟
The man said, "He is my brother or a relative." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Have you performed Hajj for yourself? حججت عن نفسك؟
The man said, "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
perform hajj on your own behalf, then perform it on behalf of Shubrumah. حج عن نفسك ثم حج عن شبرمة
Sunan Abi Dawud 1811Sahih (Al-Albani)
This hadith varies in its wording, and this is one of its versions. This indicates that if a person performs Hajj for himself, it is permissible for him to perform Hajj for another, and if he performs 'Umrah for himself, it is permissible for him to perform 'Umrah for another. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh.
