The questioner : The questioner, R. A. S., says: I would like to inquire about the prayer of istikharah.
The Shaykh : What?
The questioner : I would like to inquire about the prayer of istikharah, its method, and the time of the supplication mentioned in the prayer of istikharah. May you be rewarded.
The Shaykh : Yes. The prayer of istikharah is a recommended practice when a person hesitates about a matter because he does not know the outcome, so he entrusts the matter to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Its description is that a person prays two rak'ahs other than the obligatory prayer. When he completes the prayer with the taslim, he recites the well-known supplication of istikharah. Then, if it is decreed for him that the thing should happen, this is evidence that Allah the Exalted has chosen for him that it should happen. And if it is turned away from him by any kind of obstacle, it indicates that Allah the Exalted has chosen for him that it should not happen.
As for the statement of some people that a person must see in a dream that he has been chosen to proceed or to refrain, this has no basis. But merely by the fact that he seeks istikharah and then the action or the refraining is facilitated for him, we know that Allah the Exalted has chosen for him what is best, because he has asked his Lord to choose for him what is best. Yes.
The questioner : Are there any signs, O Shaykh, that appear on him?
The Shaykh : It may happen, and it may not. But merely by the fact that the action is facilitated for him and he does it, or obstacles and deterrents are placed between him and it so he does not do it, we know that Allah has chosen for him what is best.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good, His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad.
