Is it permissible to hold weddings in wedding halls?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : All right, we want to leave now, is that it?

The questioner : All right, just two questions. What is the ruling on men going to wedding halls for the occasion of a marriage contract, a wedding, or something like that, with some religious speeches being delivered, even though these halls are used for licentious and blameworthy weddings? I mean, today there might be a wedding for conservative people, and tomorrow a wedding for licentious people in the same place?

The Shaykh : Yes, I have been asked about this many, many times. I say, and I think you have asked this question repeatedly, that one of the ills of today's gatherings among people is extravagance. I say that if the two spouses want to celebrate their marriage, as the common saying goes, "stretch your legs on your own mat." As for going out with these parties to places designated for holding parties, and as I have been informed, it costs a lot of money. In addition to that, there may be ears on the walls, as they say. So I do not advise the two spouses to go out in a party to such places for the sake of blocking the means to harm. And that includes what you raised in your question, that licentious parties, forbidden musical parties, and so on may be held in this place. These are places where, in principle, it is not permissible to frequent them because of the sins that are committed in them. But there may be other places that are clean, like this one. Even so, I say that one should not expand the celebration of the wedding in such places that have become common in this time. And this occurrence is among the things that Muslims have been afflicted with in the present age by imitating the Europeans, because the Europeans celebrate like this; this is their celebration. They have nothing called a barrier, nothing called modesty, nothing called display, nothing of this sort. So they are contrary to the original state, as Ibn Taymiyyah said, regarding the exposure of men and the covering of women. But the disbelievers are the opposite of that; you find the woman in front and the man behind in entering and exiting. Yes.
